Rodeo completed his obedience training! So much calmer, walks nicely on a leash by your side, and other things learned as well! Such a sweet boy. Definitely formed a bond with this guy and I’ll miss him! Thanks guys for allowing me the privilege of working with him!

If a dog has what it takes, they have what it takes! This little girl, even being a heeler, is going to make a great bird dog! She has sure been a lot of fun to work with. A few more steps in the process and she will be going home to many hunting adventures with her owner! She showed us early on that she has interest inbirds. So I figured, why not give her a chance and see what she does! And she continues to impress!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our clients and friends and associates. One of the main things I really love about this job is the friendships that I make as a result. I’m also thankful for the opportunity to work with so many wonderful dogs, each one so unique and special. Thank you all so much for trusting me with your dogs, and the friendships we gain along the way as a result!

RAISING CHILDREN AND DOGS TOGETHER IN THE HOME

A topic that comes up way too often is dogs biting children in the home. Kids should never be allowed to climb on top of a dog or pull on them, or stare them in the face, or mess with them or get close to them when they are chewing on a toy or get close to them while they are eating. Keep in mind that dogs may not see little children as a person. A small child, especially a toddler, is a strange creature to a dog. And that bite is *likely* not aggression. If it was, the kid would probably be in the hospital. A nip is a way of communicating “louder” because the dog already communicated multiple times, but it was ignored - not intentionally, of course. But nonetheless.. They communicate through body language most often. Signals that most people don’t recognize. And yet the dogs give ample warning prior to this happening. They always do. The exceptions are truly aggressive dogs but again that’s usually not the case or the child would be suffering extensive damage. My encouragement to anyone with children and dogs in the home, or maybe you are looking to start a family and already have a dog, or maybe you have children and are looking into getting a new dog, is research body language. Find a trainer that can help you prior to issues occurring. Pay for some lessons, watch YouTube videos, learn all you can about dog body language. That way you are equipped with the knowledge and confidence needed, to safely manage a household with multiple dynamics. Dogs very rarely mean to cause harm. Don’t get me wrong, they can and they do at times. And there are certain cases where a dog in a child absolutely should not coexist. But so many other times, with a little knowledge on how to read a dog and a little knowledge on how to manage the home properly, you can ensure the safety of both your dog and your child and avoid problems down the road. To clarify, in no way do we want to make excuses for dogs that have mental stability or aggression issues. This post is focusing on well mannered dogs coexisting with children. But every dog has its limit. Every person has their limit. Everybody has a breaking point. At least with humans we can communicate verbally in a language that we each understand. With dogs, they communicate with body language, and they beg and plead to be given personal space so many times but most people don’t recognize these communications. And yet the dog is trying their hardest to avoid conflict. These are the situations that we want to avoid. Learn to read body language, however subtle.

Did you know that many many dogs don’t actually enjoy being touched and pet all the time? Most show subtle signs that you wouldn’t even notice unless you are looking. The four biggies are lip licking, yawning, looking away, and showing whale eye (the whites of their eyes). What are some ways you can tell your dog isn’t enjoying being pet?
