TO PLUCK OR NOT TO PLUCK?

Here’s some information for those that have a dog breed that grows thick hair out of their ear canals (especially poodle type breeds!) There are plenty of small breeds that have this need as well!

WHY PLUCK EARS?
It helps prevent ear infections by improving air circulation and reducing moisture build-up!

CAN IT CAUSE ISSUES?
Head shaking after ear plucking is a common reaction in dogs and is typically their way of responding to a temporary irritation or unfamiliar sensation in their ears. Plucking the hair can sometimes leave tiny openings in the ear canal or stimulate nerve endings, making their ears feel itchy or slightly ticklish. Think of it like having a hair or tickle in your ear—it’s not painful, but it’s a bit uncomfortable, so dogs shake to ‘fix’ the feeling.

Sometimes, the process can release trapped wax or debris, and head shaking helps the dog clear their ears more effectively. It’s similar to how we might gently shake our head if our ear feels blocked or odd after cleaning them.

ALWAYS talk to your VETERINARIAN if your pet’s ears are extremely red, if you see abnormal growth/pustules in the ear, your pet is consistently scratching at them, or if there is an odor coming from one or both ears. Lots of vets recommend ear plucking - but you will occasionally hear the vet that says if the ears aren’t bothering them, leave them alone!
