Erath County Humane Society Official page of ECHS. Donations appreciated:
https://www.aplos.com/aws/give/ErathCountyHumaneSociety We cannot accept animals outside of Erath County.

The Erath County Humane Society is a very active influence in the county offering shelter to homeless and unwanted animals. There is no charge for bringing in animals from within the county but all donations to the organization are very much appreciated. As we are usually at or past capacity, acceptance of owner surrenders is contingent on space available & there is a charge of $35. We are a no-ki

ll facility and there is no time limit on healthy, non-aggressive animals that are in our care. All dogs and cats adopted from the shelter must be spayed or neutered within a reasonable period of time, depending upon the age of the animal. This is in accordance with state law. Other requirements coincide with those ordinances on the books of the city of Stephenville such as vaccinations, tags, number of pets in the household, etc. Stephenville Police Department employs two officers to enforce those regulations. Law enforcement agencies work with shelter employees and volunteers to bring charges against anyone who cruelly mistreats or improperly cares for animals in their custody. The ECHS was organized on September 16, 1976 and is a chartered, non-profit corporation. The first shelter was the city pound to which the humane society added a small wooden building. During 1977, ECHS began to do cruelty investigations of animals, particularly staged dog fights. During the following session of the state legislature, a bill co-sponsored by Senator Bob Glasgow, Stephenville, was passed making this practice a felony in the state of Texas. In November of 1984 a climate controlled animal shelter was completed. The 40 by 16 foot building was constructed by a local contractor and cost $17,500 the cost of which, was donated by private citizens and businesses, with the help of fund raisers. ECHS works together with the City of Stephenville and the County government in controlling the animal population in this area. Monetary support for the shelter includes $17,000 annually from the city of Stephenville and $18,000 from the county. ECHS owns and maintains the two buildings constructed on the property, the second structure having been completed in 1992. The Humane Society is staffed by one full time and three part time employees. They are assisted with the help of volunteers and some individuals doing public service. The city has two salaried officers who make investigations inside the city limits concerning animal welfare. They are also responsible for capturing and bringing strays to the shelter. Animals are then processed by the shelter staff. ECHS business hours are 2:00pm to 6:00pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 12:00 to 5:00 on Saturdays. We are closed on Wednesdays and Sundays and some holidays. Donations are greatly appreciated:

Bella is a 3-year-old spayed female Catahoula Leopard mix. Bella was adopted from us back in 2022 and returned due to her jumping their fences and running in the road. She is a very sweet and energetic dog. She is very anxious here and does not like being cooped up. Her previous adopters stated she is a very good dog who loves other dogs and playing. She can jump fences and will need a tall privacy fence if she is going to be left outside unsupervised. She has never met a stranger and does good with kids. She does pull on a leash and is said not to do well in crates. She does not do well with cats as she chases them, and it is unknown how she is with livestock. She does well in cars but if the window is rolled down too far, she will jump out. Her previous owners stated she is very treat motivated. Bella has received her DHPP and Bordetella vaccines. She is spayed and microchipped. She is pending on a heartworm test. Her adopters will need to get her a rabies vaccine.

Ricky is an 8-year-old neutered male German Shepherd.
Ricky was found as a stray and was never reclaimed. He is a very sweet dog who wants to be with someone at all times. He does not like being cooped up and will try to get past us when his kennel door is open. He likes short walks and doesn't like staying outside longer than to potty. He seems to be potty trained but may need a refresher course. We do not know how he is with other animals or in a crate. He is a big love bug and loves to cuddle. Ricky has received all his vaccines, a microchip, de-wormer, and a neuter. He is heartworm negative and on prevention.

TAKE A PAWS
At the end of every semester, Tarleton Pre-vet group has an event called "Take a Paws." ECHS takes dogs to the campus so the students can "take a paws" between finals to pet the pups. We have been doing it for the past 5 years and it is always a hit!
I had one girl tell me "I have had a very bad day and really needed this."
I am a firm believer that animals are therapeutic.
Come visit us today and meet some of our awesome dogs. You can take them for a walk, a day out, or even a sleepover! We are at 891 East Rd.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 2-6 and Saturdays 12-5.

Girly Girl is a 1-year-old spayed female DSH.
Girly Girl was found as a stray and was never reclaimed. She is a sweetheart who is a bit on the shy side. She hasn't shown much interest in playing with toys, but will gladly take all of the pets. She was in a foster home for a week and did very well meeting new people. She is not a fan of being in a cat carrier. She is very vocal when it's time to eat or whenever she wants attention. She loves having a window to look out of. Girly Girl is fully vaccinated, dewormed, spayed, and microchipped.
