https://www.aplos.com/aws/give/ErathCountyHumaneSociety We cannot accept animals outside of Erath County.

The Erath County Humane Society is a very active influence in the county offering shelter to homeless and unwanted animals. There is no charge for bringing in animals from within the county but all donations to the organization are very much appreciated. As we are usually at or past capacity, acceptance of owner surrenders is contingent on space available & there is a charge of $35. We are a no-ki

ll facility and there is no time limit on healthy, non-aggressive animals that are in our care. All dogs and cats adopted from the shelter must be spayed or neutered within a reasonable period of time, depending upon the age of the animal. This is in accordance with state law. Other requirements coincide with those ordinances on the books of the city of Stephenville such as vaccinations, tags, number of pets in the household, etc. Stephenville Police Department employs two officers to enforce those regulations. Law enforcement agencies work with shelter employees and volunteers to bring charges against anyone who cruelly mistreats or improperly cares for animals in their custody. The ECHS was organized on September 16, 1976 and is a chartered, non-profit corporation. The first shelter was the city pound to which the humane society added a small wooden building. During 1977, ECHS began to do cruelty investigations of animals, particularly staged dog fights. During the following session of the state legislature, a bill co-sponsored by Senator Bob Glasgow, Stephenville, was passed making this practice a felony in the state of Texas. In November of 1984 a climate controlled animal shelter was completed. The 40 by 16 foot building was constructed by a local contractor and cost $17,500 the cost of which, was donated by private citizens and businesses, with the help of fund raisers. ECHS works together with the City of Stephenville and the County government in controlling the animal population in this area. Monetary support for the shelter includes $17,000 annually from the city of Stephenville and $18,000 from the county. ECHS owns and maintains the two buildings constructed on the property, the second structure having been completed in 1992. The Humane Society is staffed by one full time and three part time employees. They are assisted with the help of volunteers and some individuals doing public service. The city has two salaried officers who make investigations inside the city limits concerning animal welfare. They are also responsible for capturing and bringing strays to the shelter. Animals are then processed by the shelter staff. ECHS business hours are 2:00pm to 6:00pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 12:00 to 5:00 on Saturdays. We are closed on Wednesdays and Sundays and some holidays. Donations are greatly appreciated:

Indi is a 3-year-old spayed female American Bulldog mix.
Indi was adopted in October of 2024 and returned due to learning the bad habit of chewing on things she's not supposed to from their neighbor's dog. She is great with kids and new people. She cannot be in a home with cats or nearby access to livestock as she will chase them. She did good with other dogs in her previous home, but we do highly recommend a meet and greet with any current household dogs. Indi can jump fences at least 5' high. She is housebroken, crate trained, and does well being left alone. We do recommend she be crated when left alone if you plan on leaving stuff out that she may be able to chew on. She has been used to sleeping overnight on her own dog bed. She does well for baths and brushing. Car rides stress her out and she will hyperventilate the whole ride. She has been decent on a leash so far, but a previous owner said she has days where she pulls. She knows a few basic commands. Indi is spayed, vaccinated with DHPP and Bordetella vaccines, and microchipped. She is heartworm negative and on prevention. She is due for a rabies vaccination.

Fun Gus was found here in Stephenville and was never reclaimed. We do not know much about him other than he seems to be an older rooster. He does not like being here and would much rather be outside. He does have some scars on his spurs suggesting he got into some fights.

Green Bean is a 4-year-old neutered male Australian Shepherd/Catahoula Leopard Dog mix.
Green Bean was adopted in 2021 and returned from a neglectful situation. He is a happy boy that loves attention. He is still very puppy like in his energy and needs a home that can give him the exercise that he deserves. He is not low maintenance at all. He does very well with other dogs, cats, and kids. He needs some serious leash work. He usually does well with meeting new people, but will let it known if there is someone that comes into his home that he does not like. He previously had separation anxiety in his very first home in 2021 and he broke a window when left alone. It is strongly recommended to crate him while gone. Green Bean is a very, very energetic dog. He lacks all manners and will jump on you, run from you, and invade personal space any chance he can get. He is food aggressive towards both people and animals. Green Bean is neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm negative and on prevention.
