Can we please put this to rest? Christian people have literally gone nuts over this. The opening ceremony at the Paris Olympics had nothing to do with da Vinci’s Last Supper. The part of the ceremony under scrutiny depicted Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and joy, in contrast to the decapitation of Marie Antoinette. This juxtaposition symbolized joy and celebration against the absurdity of violence. In addition, Dionysus symbolically connected the Olympics to its Greek heritage.
Secondly, I'd like to comment that based on my academic research, da Vinci's last supper is rather biased. It depicts a bunch of white men. The people at the last supper were not white. They were Middle Eastern brown men....the folks who inhabited that region, at the time.
This is not to try to place myself above those who have not had the advantage I had in education and life experience, but, I've spent a fortune in time and money on religious education, 4 degrees and original research that include theology, Bible, topography, history, geology, anthropology, sociology, psychology, human behavior, counseling, critical thinking, political science, theory, language and others. I do not know one person in any part of, "The Academy," who would believe or support the conspiracy that has flooded the internet since the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Paris. I'm afraid that the global community in which we live thinks this makes us look really dumb.
I wish people would do some research before assuming everything they see on Facebook is the Gospel truth. It isn't. It is filled with conspiracy theories, ignorance, downright lies and half baked theories.
Go, U.S.A. May all the participants around the world be safe and happy.
