I Wish I'd Known Then
Have you ever thought, I wish I'd known then what I know now. To me, that depends on how you learned what you now know.
Is what you know now a result of reaching, striving, achieving, studying, working ahead, and gaining positive forward momentum on what you know? Have you asked questions and gotten advice from those who really do know more than you? If so, you have earned the right to make that statement.
If, however, what you know now is a result of negative experiences that have left you stuck, confused, intimidated, frustrated, and caused you to quit, you've deceived yourself. Have you concluded you know it all and don't need advice from anyone? Then perhaps what you know now is getting in your way. Maybe you really don't know much at all. At worst, you knew more then.
Obviously, there are exceptions. For example, the old saying, "What is the best way to gain experience?" You know the rest. When you can admit to mistakes, you learn what not to do. Great information. Yet if you think the lesson was to never try again, or if advice you sought was wrong and you stopped asking others, you have built a wall to your advancement and ability to know more.
I have a saying as this pertains to horses. "A finished horse only needs to know 2 things, how to master the basics, and learn what not to do." Meaning that the basics continue to advance as they learn, and in the process, the mistakes become less frequent until they are eventually rare.
The horse knows now what he didn't know then.
I also have another statement. "There's no such thing as a finished horse." I know, now you're totally confused. To explain, when someone says they have a finished horse, it really means one of 2 things. First, it's finished in one particular discipline. For example, he might be a finished cutter, but he's 2 years away from being a finished reiner. And vice versa in other comparisons as well.
The 2nd is less sexy. It means that if someone tells me they have a finished horse, the horse is finished to as much as the rider knows. Perhaps that same horse is actually pretty green to a more accomplished rider, even in the same discipline. That's why I suggest riding up. Ride with people who are better than you. No matter who you think you are. I do. I still have so much to learn, but I have earned the right to say, "I wish I'd known then what I know now."
We want to give a big congratulations to a member of our barn, Fallon, for receiving her first buckle!
Fallon and her mare Nurse Rey Rhymes put in the work this year and we’re so proud of their success!
