Lameness Check - Hot Nails
Lameness is caused by a wide variety of things. This horse was lame at a a trot but not at a walk or lope. We pulled the shoe and will soak his foot in Epsom salts for a few days and he should be good to go.
This horse was lame at a trot, but sound at a walk and lope. Took him for a lameness exam inclusive of x rays and confirmed an abscess in the heel.
Dr. Dorris cleaned the foot of debris and drainage, wrapping it twice with a poultice pad over the course of a week prior to video.
Throughly cleaning your horses feet regularly is important.
๐ Laceration Repair ๐
The first video shows how much space is under the skin and why a drain is so important for this case. If we closed the wound without a drain, most likely it would fill up with fluid due to the โdead space.โ By inserting a drain, the wound can start healing and the fluid can drain for the next 72 hours.

One of the most common areas to adjust in rope & barrel horses is the sacrum!
Check this video out of motion palpation to check the sacrum to see if it needs to be adjusted.

๐ต Cactus thorns/spines๐ต can be an inciting cause to secondary coronary band abscesses.
This patient was sound the day before and 3-legged the next. A few common rule outs for this scenario are fracture or abscess but sometimes we run into cases where we remove tiny space occupying objects like cacti thorns!
See the comments section and see the Smart RLT Regenerative Laser in action! We use the laser in these cases to jump start healing, alleviate pain and get our patients more comfortable, in addition to decreasing any scar tissue formation.
This patient is expected to make a full recovery!

When Chiropractic Care is #OnPoint ๐
Did you know....chiropractic care is one of the best ways to maintain your equine athlete!
Chiropractic Adjustments allow the bodyโs nervous system to function at 100%, therefore if there are any issues, the body can heal itself before lameness issues arrive.
Also, did you know....in the great state of Texas, there are only 2 professionals licensed to perform adjustments on horses LEGALLY; which are Human Chiropractors and Veterinarians who have been through an Animal Chiropractic Program.
