PSA to Rahn Hoof Care Clients:
It has been brought to my attention, from a few clients, that a FALSE RUMOR has been circulating that I am not doing one or two horse stops anymore. I put my best care and effort into every individual stop, whether there is one horse or twenty. Clients are serviced based on to their adherence to client guidelines and ability to fit in my schedule. I encourage my clients to keep an open line of communication with me. If there are ever any concerns in the future, please don’t hesitate to ask me personally.

Sometimes you do the best you can with what you have at that moment. This is a left hind foot that was barefoot and got pretty busted up on the outside of the foot. There wasn’t much to nail to, but I was able to get a shoe on. The goal is, over the next couple cycles, to get some heathy growth, and work on balancing the foot.

Rahn Hoof Care Client Guidelines:

Following is a list of guidelines that have been created to help facilitate a healthy Farrier/Client relationship. Whether you are an existing customer, or a potential customer interested in getting on the books with Rahn Hoof Care, please read the following to understand the expectation of the service provider to make sure our Farrier/Client Relationship can be the best for both parties involved. As always, this post is not meant to discourage any party, but rather make a positive impact. The guidelines are as follows:

(1) Appointments are during business hours (8am-4pm Monday to Friday)
Reason: Shoeing horses is a physical job, and I have a limit to how much I can do in a day. On top of shoeing horses, I put additional time into my business to keep it running smoothly and need time away for my personal life.

(2) Future appointments must be scheduled at the conclusion of current appointments. Reason: I have a busy schedule, and the best way to ensure you have an appointment with me is to set one up in advance. Those that schedule with me at the end of an appointment take priority over the ones that do not. Routes are made to be both cost and labor efficient, and there are times when I simply cannot fit someone in or have reached my physical limit for the day.

(3) 24 Hour Cancellation Notice
Reason: As stated above, I run a pretty tight schedule and cancelling the day of puts me in a bind. For that reason, I can’t keep people on my books that move appointment times or cancel repeatedly.

(4) Payment is Due at time of Service
Reason: Unless we have an agreement upon arrangement before our appointment, payments are required at the end of each appointment.

(5) Safety of Humans/Horses is priority.
Reason: I cannot do my best work if your horse does not stand well or is unsafe to do. I understand that some horses need patience for a variety of reasons. Sedation may be requested for ones that cannot be done safely.

(6) Having a Clean Work Environment.
Reason: Having a flat, well lit, and obstacle-free working area allows me to be able to do my best work. It also helps if something does happen that I have the ability to navigate the space to avoid injury

(7) Having Clean Horses.
Reason: Having wet or muddy horses affects my safety and ability to do my job. It also dulls my tools. I don’t expect perfection, but effort is noticed and appreciated.

(8) Maintain Professional Levels of Respect
Reason: If we need to have a discussion, I am open for it and will give you the utmost respect. If I am not met with the same respect, I will be unable to provide future services.

If any future or existing customers have any questions, comments, or concerns, I would be happy to discuss this list with you. I understand there are exceptions, but I will be sticking to my list closely to ensure everyone involved can benefit from the Farrier/Client Relationship.

Thank you.
-Jim Rahn

Making some good progress on a horse with a quarter crack. This is my second time doing the horse since the crack was discovered. The crack was all the way to the hairline on the inside of the left front foot. I decided to put a frog support pad and cut the pad out from the crack to the medial heel; to alleviate pressure. In addition, since the horse is being turned out and being used regularly, I decided to put some soft equi-pack between the shoe and the foot where the pad was cut out. I found that this doesn’t put too much pressure on the heel, but still allows you to cover the shoe and help it from getting pulled off. At times, a Farrier hast to think outside the box.

“A lot of people will get stuck in a rut doing the same things over and over. It usually takes a tragedy to get them to get them out of the rut.”
The above quote was said by a presenter at a clinic I was at this past weekend. It impacted me more than I wish to admit.
I tried something new today and I learned from it. That’s a feeling I am going to keep chasing.

This year I am working hard on improving myself, and my skill.
It is not easy and there are times where I question myself. Failure is only a reality when you accept it, and quit moving forward.
