Uncle Murphy on the right at almost 14 weeks. Nephew Landon on the left at 2 1/2 years. He is so good with “unk”. Taught him swimming last weekend as in follow me across the pond. He is officially a water pup and I bought a pile of dog towels at Goodwill.

Puppies love toys. The hedgehog from Fleet Farm is still his favorite, followed by the $1.25 Flying Squirrel with a squeaker at the Dollar Store and an empty plastic tonic water bottle with gravel in it. Some pretty good wrestling matches with the hedgehog.

I have the good fortune of watching Boogie on occasion, she belongs to some close friends and has known me since being a little pup. We were going through pedigrees and it turns out Boogie’s brother is Murphy’s grandfather on the mother’s side! Boogie is a Thistle Rock Golden out of Minnesota, and her brother is a field champion and has his master hunter title. Pretty cool!

We have started “place” training. A portable raised and carpeted 2x2 platform. It makes it easy to train a pup to sit and start from the heel position on the left side, makes it easy to learn stay, puts the pup a little higher aiding eye contact, and it becomes his place to start training. When it is moved to wherever we are going to train they get excited knowing they get to do some work and have some fun! Murphy is now 9 1/2 weeks and knows the sit, up and come commands, and almost the down command (we are really close), and are working on stay. I don’t force stay too much at this age because his drive instinct should not be suppressed. When his “place” is in the kitchen it is also a great spot for naps. Potty training is improving leaps and bounds by the day. Soon crate training begins. I don’t do it before they have some control of their potty schedule. Pups should not be forced to lay in their urine.

If you look closely notice the “Boogie lean” because she is not happy taking a pic with little s**t Murphy that has been pulling her tail, trying to drink water out the bowl at the same time, wanting her stick and just being a typical puppy. She has been very tolerant and it is always good for a puppy to socialize with older dogs.

Murphy just baptized himself thinking he is tough enough to follow Boogie into the pond. Boogie laughed, I laughed, Murphy is now yapping at Boogie. A lesson learned. Time to dig out the dog towels.

Place training. A 2x2 carpeted platform that the dog relates to as fun work. I bring it out and they are on it immediately. It all starts there with retrievers. Even with Maya being advanced in her field training she loves the wagon wheel from her “place”. I use six dummies and have her at heal on her place. She needs to memorize where each one landed and retrieve them on my line command out of sequence of how they were thrown. She loves it and because of the training we don’t lose birds. A dog on a tight line from the send. Takes a long time to learn.

Landon and Boogie loving our unusually warm February weather

My one-eyed beat up and busted up rescue kitty boy Spartacus who appeared in my garage one morning in late July. About a year old. The vet said he has the injuries of what is seen when a hawk gets ahold of a cat, takes out their eyes, and then takes them to a great height and then drops them to kill them. I didn’t want another cat but I got him all healed, tutored (neutered), 3 teeth pulled, shots, and now he is healed and hate to say it, awesome, and now part of the family. A wonderful very intelligent cat. And thinks he’s a dog. And Maya and Sparty are best buds. Play, play play.

Here is Penny at 6 months running pylons. Abby said it has nothing to do with hunting, but I disagree. It shows a pup eager to learn, and it all relates. Field bred Goldens are dogs that need a job. Great work Abby and Penny!
