UPDATE! Miss Penny has found her forever family! Super excited for her future! 🥰🐾 Thanks for everyone that shared.

We have a very special opportunity for anyone looking for a young adult with professional training!
Penny
DOB; 11/8/2022

Penny is maturing into a beautiful young dog. She comes from some really nice proven field lines and shows a lot of potential herself. Her sire is a Master Hunter who competed in the 2021 Master Nationals and her dam is working as a Search and Rescue canine.

Penny has almost 4 months of work with a professional gundog trainer under her belt. She has gone through considerable obedience training including sit means stay, place, on and off lead heel, etc. She has been force fetched, collar conditioned, and is retrieving ducks and bumpers off a winger on both land and water. Penny has also had poppers shot above her and displays no gun shyness. She has a very soft mouth.

Penny has good drive and enthusiasm and has a very sweet & gentle side. She is a thinker, team player, and learns very fast. She has good house manners, is crate trained, and gets along great with other dogs.

She would excel as a hunt test prospect, hunting companion, working or sport prospect, as well as a family companion. Penny has her OFA Preliminary hips "Good", OFA Preliminary elbows "Normal", OFA eyes "Normal w/bo A3", and DNA genetics (Clear for ICH 2, PRA 1&2, PRA-prcd, NCL, MD, DM, carrier for ICH 1).

Penny’s trainer, Nick Schiele of Canton Retrievers, has generously offered 2 one hour sessions free with him to get to know Penny, what she knows, and how she works.

It’s been a busy, eventful summer thus far and we’re not even done. We haven’t been posting much as we’ve been focused building birds dogs and uprighting our new kennel building. However, I wanted to stop and thank everyone of my clients, friends and followers for your support throughout the years, without you this wouldn’t be possible. .0

What is it that retriever trainers really do?

In this profession you hear a lot of opinions and thoughts on what having a retriever trained by a pro actually means. Some think that their sweet baby they once knew will come back a robot that has been broken to do the task. Some think they will get a dog back that just simply listens. Some think that their dog will have developed a sixth sense to know wear all the birds are a work flawlessly. Some don’t know what to expect and just know that their dog is being trained to be a duck dog. Most of these opinions could not be further from the truth.

But what does this training actually do?

In the process of training a retriever a couple of things happen. For one obedience and making sure that your dog is well mannered and listens when it is told a command is of top priority. On top of this the dog is taught how to formally retrieve, in this process it is taught his job. Lastly each gun dog is exposed to different components and stimuli that might be encountered on a hunt so that in a hunting situation it has a general idea of what is going on and has had exposer to hunting concepts.

Does this mean that your retriever is ready to perform to your expectations the day you take them home from your trainer? Easy answer is NO.

As trainers all we do within the process previously mentioned is give the dog the tools in a controlled setting to learn to be able to pickup birds efficiently and effectively in the field. Every step we give them a piece of the puzzle. Nothing you can do in training can simulate the excited and beautiful chaos of a hunt. The handler is the one responsible to guide their retriever in putting those puzzle pieces together to ensure that they are capable of reaching their full potential in using the tools they have been given. It is important to remember a dog and handler are a TEAM.

That being said when sending your retriever to a trainer remember to make an effort in learning how to maximize your dogs potential, and be able to effectively problem solve with your dog in the field. This small piece is often missed and leads to confused dogs and frustrated handlers. Remember to keep you and your retriever happy by knowing how to be a good teammate.
