How we make sure our horses are bomb proof!

I read a theory about why so many riders lack a deep command of basics, and it was explained like this---

Correct basics are hard to master because there is an enormous amount of repetition involved, and if someone has tried something hundreds, possibly thousands of times, and still can’t do it, it is easy for the person to conclude that he/she is taking on an impossible challenge.

In his book “Mastery,” George Leonard wrote that on the quest to become good, there will be long stretches of “seeming non-improvement.”

Like watching grass grow, change is happening, but so slowly that it can’t be measured daily, weekly, or even monthly. But at some point, for those who stick with it, “suddenly” they can do things that before they couldn’t do.

The issue is giving up in frustration before putting in those many many many many months of practice.

That is ONE theory. I am sure there are many others, but this one does ring true.

"Am I a good rider?" she asked, pensively, sat upon her 14.2 cob, covered in poo stains that she couldn’t quite get out before her lesson, that she had persuaded her mum to buy a year ago for just £400 as he wasn’t wanted any more.

"Why do you ask that?" her instructor replied, for she knew how this young girl felt - her eyes often lingered somewhere in between her horse's ears or the other side of the school when teaching.

"Because I want to be one."

Her instructor pondered on this for a good few minutes, whilst reassuring the nervous cob in front, and then said:
"A good rider is not someone who buys flashy horses and competes every Saturday and makes it to the top within a year.
A good rider is not someone who jumps the highest jumps or owns the fastest horse.
A good rider isn’t made just because they’ve been riding since they were 3.
A good rider is not someone who can move their forward horse forward...

No..........

A good rider is that pony clubber you see fall off every time she gets on something new, yet still gets back on with a smile on her face.
A good rider is that girl who cries in the tack room because of how her horse behaved and how hard it’s been to cope watching everyone else be successful, but to her it seems like she is the only one failing, yet still rewards her horse with a treat and a smile because at least he was better than last time.
A good rider is the boy with the angel horse, yet doesn’t claim any of its successes for himself. 'It was all him,' he would say, 'I just sat to it.’
A good rider listens.
A good rider is soft.
A good rider makes sure the horse is always happy,
As a matter of fact, a good rider often has nothing to do with the riding.
If you love it, and you try, and you try again, even when you fall off and it was your fault, even when people point because your seat isn’t quite as deep as they’d prefer, if you never give up, that’s what makes a good rider."

October is flying by! Looking forward to seeing everyone for our show on the 29th. We have decided to add in a Halloween costume class. We will run the class as close to noon as possible. Individual or group costumes with your horse to be judged in a parade of costumes. Leadline riders also encouraged to show in your costumes as well as long as you can still wear a helmet and proper shoes/boots for riding.

Dearest Riders,

Please let me remind you of something very important. Horse showing, riding and training are insanely difficult. If you have a crappy ride, a less than stellar show ring result (or if you made your trainer want to pull their hair out today), it just means there's more to learn. The people who had good rides today are not exempt from disappointing rides tomorrow. They also have bad days and, if they're very experienced riders, they've had a whole bunch of bad days.

There will always be someone out there on a more talented horse, someone with a bigger bank account, someone who never struggled to learn to sit the trot...life isn't fair. You probably can't win the lottery or grow 5 more inches of leg. You can, however, wake up every morning and be thankful that you're able to ride horses. Work hard at becoming the best rider you can be with the body and the bank account that you have right now. Work at being the rider your horse wants up there on his back. Your horse's opinion of your riding is more valuable than any judge's opinion could ever be.

Bridge is passable for those who need to get here but if there is no emergency for you to be here we are fine horses are all happy and could careless about the flood damage. All waters have receded now it’s going to be clean up time for a while.

I had an interesting long talk with someone who spends the winters in Wellington.

She made a comment that matches what I have long believed, that you can ride like an Olympic rider without going to the Olympics, and that you can go to the Olympics without riding like an Olympian.

Why? How?

Because of what I think of as the "magic tennis racket" concept.

Imagine that, at any given time, there are only just so many magic tennis rackets in the world, rackets that have a sensory ability to "feel" the oncoming ball, and return it flawlessly.

Imagine that the price for one of these is astronomical. If you can play tennis reasonably well, and if, in addition, you can afford one of these rackets, you will be unbeatable.

If, however, you are an excellent tennis player, but you can't get hold of such a racket, you will be consistently beaten by those who do have one.

Which is like the horse world. Unlike most sports where everyone starts with the same equipment, there ARE "magical" horses, and if you can ride reasonably well, and can afford one, you will win more often than not.

Which is another way of saying a simple fact. Horse sports are slanted in favor of the wealthy in ways that boxing, soccer, most other sports are not, and if even they are, nowhere to the degree that they are in horse sports.

But you can still ride beautifully and effectively, even though your chances of having magic horses are slim. You need magic horses to win. But you don't need magic horses to learn to ride. You need horses.

Hard to accept, I know----But life never was known for being fair---
