There are probably quite a few riders who consistently have great posture every ride, every time, but if so, I have never been one of them.

I have to actively think about staying upright, chin up, shoulders back and down. Now, for sure, I could drag out a litany of excuses, that I spend long hours hacking, that I’ve had various injuries, lots of wear and tear over many decades, you know the drill.

But nobody cares about the Excuse Train, because that’s a train to Nowhere Land.

If you/I/we/they want good posture, the Sit-Up-Tall fairy doesn’t generally come floating down from the sky with her magic wand, one tap on our slouched shoulders and we are transformed.

Being tall and open and looking up is a habit, just as having rounded shoulders and looking down is a habit. So maybe try to make THIS effort---When you are actually schooling, and where your balance counts more, make a special effort that for those minutes you’ll temporarily hop off the Excuse Train.

It can’t do any harm to try----.

Last show of 2024 today we went to Van Dolah Stables and had a great day! Kaitlyn and Mira started us off in the 2’ Hopeful Hunters a bit of a rocky start but finished with a 4th in their 3rd fence class and a 2nd in the hack! On to Beginner rider and Kendall and Whiskey coming out with 3 thirds and a 4th in their first show together. Next up was the pleasure division for Piper and Ping and Mariah rode our young boy Phen in his first ever off property horse show. Piper and Ping did great finishing with a 1st, 2 2nds and a 3rd for reserve champion. Phen schooled great for being somewhere new he got a little excited cantering with a group but Mariah did a great job and they can home with 3 4ths. As always I am thankful for the team of support from parents to fellow students helping each other throughout the day!

I have been slacking in my FB posting…on November 30th Kaitlyn and Mira went to Brookside to finish up their year in the Beginner Rider division. They came home with 2 2nds and 2 4ths earning some points to finish the year tied for 2nd in the NJPHA Beginner Rider division for the year. Then on December 8th we had our show here at the farm. Was a great day thank you to all who came out and showed with us! Mateo and Mira had a tough day in the walk trot but he rode well and got a 2nd in his Figure 8 class. Mariah rode our young boy Changewater Phenomena in the walk trot classes for his first ever horse show. Apples and Whiskey won their equitation flat class and were 2nd and 3rd in the cross rails. Today Mariah and Whiskey returned to Lotus with a bit of a rushed start they went in and laid down a great trip in the Itty Bitty power and speed class for a 2nd place finish. Couple mistakes and off course in their next 2 Itty Bitty rounds but then moved up to the .80m class and did the speed round with a 4th place finish in that class. Piper and Ping also finished up tier year 3rd in the NJPHA Mini Stirrup. Proud of my team and all your hard work!

Come join us next Sunday for our Schooling Daze show. Fun easy show in a friendly atmosphere.

How we make sure our horses are bomb proof!

I read a theory about why so many riders lack a deep command of basics, and it was explained like this---

Correct basics are hard to master because there is an enormous amount of repetition involved, and if someone has tried something hundreds, possibly thousands of times, and still can’t do it, it is easy for the person to conclude that he/she is taking on an impossible challenge.

In his book “Mastery,” George Leonard wrote that on the quest to become good, there will be long stretches of “seeming non-improvement.”

Like watching grass grow, change is happening, but so slowly that it can’t be measured daily, weekly, or even monthly. But at some point, for those who stick with it, “suddenly” they can do things that before they couldn’t do.

The issue is giving up in frustration before putting in those many many many many months of practice.

That is ONE theory. I am sure there are many others, but this one does ring true.
