Trim Plane

If the hoof loses 3deg of PA in a 6 week shoe cycle (average) it’s important that we put that 3deg back in our trim.

The diagram below is an example of the change in PA over a 6 week shoe cycle & how different trim planes influence PA

The top hoof in the diagram shows a level trim plane, which will maintain the lower PA angle ie 3deg less than ideal

This is opposed to the bottom hoof, who has a trim plane that removes more toe than heel. This trim plane will correct the PA that was lost over the 6 week shoe cycle, so is more ideal

** Study shows on average a foot loses 3deg of PA in a 6 week shoe cycle (Weller)

Trying to help a big ol English pleasure horse turn sound again.

Flat steel shoes with 3 degree wedge pads. Old guy had a bad abscess on the left toe. Radiographs shows this big guy has some downward movement of the coffin bone.
