Everyone, please meet Splash the goat🐐💕

Check out her story 👇🩺

I met Splash my first evening back in Clovis. In the midst of unpacking from the recent chaos of graduation, grad parties and visiting friends and family my phone rang.

Considering that I didn’t officially start work for another week and it was already close to 8:30pm…I was curious why I was getting a call from my boss.

Come to find out, little Splash was having an impossible time trying to kid and every other large animal vet within driving distance was unavailable. (We need more vets!!!!) Although a bit nervous to fly solo on my first patient as Dr. Price, I excitedly agreed to help! Shoutout to FA med rotation 23 for giving me tons of experience with small ruminant dystocias😅

Splash was critical and it was evident she needed a c-section and intensive care to give her the best chance at survival. Having assisted and preformed several before, I was ready to go! However, I was quickly reminded that all animals do NOT read the textbook. Splash ended up being one of the most challenging surgeries for me so far. When I finally got the baby out it was evident why…this tiny 23 pound Pygmy goat had a 6 pound baby!!! Pygmy goat babies are normally only 2 pounds…😨

Honestly, I was’t sure she would make it through surgery but with the help and support of my ✨ROCKSTAR✨ team…I got to see Splash for her final recheck this weekend. 🥳

Her owner greeted me with a huge smile and a hug! Seeing a healthy Splash and the excitement on her owner’s face made the past 8 years of grueling school worth it.

I truly am in the greatest profession ever ❤️

It’s okay Zucchini, vegetables aren’t supposed to have 4 legs!

I completed my first feline limb amputation on the sweetest kitty named Zucchini! 😻

Even though a limb amputation sounds very scary…cats {and dogs} actually do GREAT on 3 legs. There are many indications for limb removal such as:
- Infection 😷
- Cancer 🤕
- Fractures 🦴
- Nerve damage 🧠

What a lovely day for teeth extractions🦷

Horses can develop a condition called Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EORTH) which can eventually lead to a very painful mouth causing weight loss. The solution is to extract the incisors before they become too diseased and horses will bounce back to eating normally with no more pain🤗

Highly recommend taking nighttime emergencies where you get to take care of and love on premature calves❤️

The face you make when mom volunteers you for ultrasound training…

Petey was the best boy while we practiced abdominal scans to find the major organs such as liver, spleen, kidneys, and bladder.

Needless to say he got plenty of treats afterwards!🐶🦴

We get a lot of questions about externships and where to go, or what to do while you are there, so here is the Vet.tastic Top 7 guide to externships!

1. Ask friends and mentors about previous externships they have done to get ideas of where to go….and where not to go 😬
2. Be bold! This is your time to learn, so jump in and ask to do procedures, perfect your clinical skills, and try to work up the cases on your own.
3. Go do something new - take the opportunity to try something you have always wanted to do but maybe never had the chance.
4. Just a tip - some externships PAY YOU. Keep this in mind😉
5. Show up on time and be prepared. You don’t have to be perfect, just go in with confidence and do your best. That’s all they ask for.
6. Your questions are never stupid or annoying. Chances are, it is a good question, and a good learning opportunity.
7. Last but not least, always bring snacks with you!! My personal favorite to keep on hand is a banana and a bag of wheat thins! 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌

Send us all your externship questions and we will try our best to give you some answers!

Half way through our second rotation??😱 things I have learned so far:
- confidence is KEY (and fake it if you’re not)
- HELP YOUR ROTATION MATES!!
- trust and appreciate the techs
- there is a black hole that steals thermometers and pens
- try looking stuff up on your own before asking (unless it’s an emergency 🤪)
- this is only for one year- the good and the bad parts of clinics are temporary and that’s sometimes difficult to remember in the moment. We are getting closer to that DVM every day 😳😍
