WINSTON'S JOURNEY - Winston, a beloved 10-year-old Poodle mix, came to our hospital facing a tough battle with symptoms of fever, lethargy, vomiting and lack of appetite. He was hospitalized in our ICU where diagnostic testing took place. The team performed a urinalysis, blood work, fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and cytology of the enlarged lymph nodes, abdominal radiographs to rule out a foreign body, and a full abdominal ultrasound.

Bloodwork showed signs of inflammation and elevated total bilirubin. The abdominal ultrasound also revealed changes in the pancreas consistent with pancreatitis and enlarged abdominal lymph nodes.

While hospitalized, Winston developed Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH). After a week of intensive treatment, Winston began to improve. He received a combination of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, pain management, anti-nausea medication, and supportive care. We were thrilled to see him start eating again and regain his strength.

Thanks to our dedicated ECC team's around-the-clock care, and the expertise of our criticalist Dr. Andreza Conti Patara, he pulled through! Winston's recovery was a testament to his resilience and the expertise of our team. His treatment was possible because he was hospitalized in our ICU with a doctor and technician monitoring him 24 hours a day.

We're so grateful to have him back home, happy and healthy. 🧡

🔔 Jake rang the bell! 🔔

Jake, a 6.5-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, was diagnosed with Lymphoma by Dr. Paul DeMars and the Primary Care team. Lymphoma is a common cancer seen in dogs and typically responds well to chemotherapy.

Dr. DeMars has seen Jake since 2018 when he was just a puppy. Jake's first day of chemo was on Feb. 29 and he finished his cancer treatments at the end of last month, and rang the bell!

Meet this little fighter! 🦓

This baby zebra came in feeling lethargic and was diagnosed with mild pneumonia. After starting antibiotics and a feeding tube, he slowly began to regain his strength. To lift his spirits, his Donkey buddy was brought in for some much-needed emotional support. Once he was eating vigorously, he was ready to head home. During his 2 week follow up call, his owners reported that he was doing great!

🧤Livestock Biosecurity🧤

Biosecurity is a key component to animal health and disease prevention on any livestock farm. It's also the most important measure to reduce and prevent diseases from spreading to any farm or ranch.

Dr. Rosslyn Biggs, Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine clinical assistant professor and beef cattle extension specialist, emphasizes the importance of biosecurity.

❗WILDLIFE SAFETY❗

Encountering an orphaned or injured wild animal can be a delicate and emotional situation. Knowing the right steps to take can make a significant difference in the animal's well-being and chances of survival.

If you find an orphaned and injured wild animal, it can be brought to the Oklahoma State University Boren Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for assessment and rehabilitation by the Zoological Medicine Service, with the goal of releasing these animals back into the wild. However, it is important to know if an animal truly needs help, or if it is just exhibiting normal behavior.

This blue heeler puppy and his littermate were discovered in rough shape by a compassionate bystander. Both were infested with fleas and ticks, and the puppy pictured had a severe, infected wound on his abdomen. Thanks to the help of Stillwater Animal Control, the puppy received urgent care from Dr. Alli Biddick and the rest of our emergency and critical care team, including IV fluids, antibiotics, dewormer and extensive wound treatment. After five days of dedicated recovery, he is now thriving in the care of his foster mom, alongside his sibling who was also rescued. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to getting these puppies back on the mend.

Meet Cobweb, a 2-year-old male cat who survived Bobcat Fever (Cytauxzoon felis) with the help of our dedicated emergency and critical care team!

After presenting with fever, anemia, and a challenging infection, he was admitted to our hospital for comprehensive care. From IV fluids and a nasoesophageal tube to address his nutrition and medications, to ongoing monitoring and treatment, Cobweb showed incredible resilience. By July 2, following a successful esophagostomy tube placement, Cobweb was bright-eyed and eager to return home. Just a week later, Cobweb came back for the removal of the esophagostomy tube and is now thriving.

Here’s to Cobweb’s continued recovery and many more happy, healthy days ahead! 😺
