This a little long, but if you are selling pigs out of state please read!

- Pigs going out of state should have a CVI before leaving Oklahoma!

This is especially important for the following states:
⚠️Texas- I’m sure the checkpoints will be open
⚠️New Mexico- CVI required for show permit
⚠️Arizona- CVI required for show check in
⚠️California- nothing more to say
⚠️Florida- CVI required for entry across state line
I’m sure I’m missing 44 other states or something like that.

- Give me as much time to complete CVIs as possible. This does NOT mean sending info when you are 30 away from the destination state.

- Most states require permits! Some of these can be acquired online, but others require a phone call. Hence the reason for allowing time to complete CVIs.

- Put the 840 tag in the pig’s ear. Don’t send it the tag with the hauler or buyer. Put the tag in the ear! This solves a whole lot of potential issues down the road and keeps the monkey off everyone’s backs.

- Info needed:
🥸 Buyer name/ 🗺️ physical address/ ☎️ phone number/💻 email address.

🐖 Animal info: ear notch/breed/color/gender/840 number.

It is greatly appreciated for this info to be in a spreadsheet!

The address must be the physical address of where the pigs are housed, not PO Boxes or town addresses. There are in fact states that look at addresses on google maps and will not issue permits if animals aren’t house at the address given.

The 👆 things are to streamline the process. It’s also based off situations that occur on a routine basis.

I cannot, nor will I back date CVIs! I also will not write CVIs after the animals have arrived in the destination state.

Still applies now.

“On The Backside of the Farrowing Crate”

Sow can piglet comfort and farrowing crate setup.

We see a whole lot of different farrowing crates and some pen farrowing set ups. In the summer we all struggle with keeping sows cool while maintaining a dry, warm, draft free area for the piglets. Piglets will seek warmth before everything else. It is critical that they are warm in those first few days of life in order for them to get the colostrum they need. There are some crucial issues that needs to be discussed.

- Fan placement. Farrowing crates should not be like a wind tunnel. If you are placing fans over sows they should be placed over their head. Not at the back of the crate or over the middle. Pigs will huddle out of the breeze rather than nurse. This is even more profound if they get wet. Secure the fan to the crate.

- Misters and drip systems. If using a drip system make sure that it is on the front of the sow and not dripping over her middle getting pigs wet. Also make sure it isn’t hitting the crate and splashing everywhere. I don’t usually recommend using a misting system and you can’t control where the water goes and usually the whole crate ends up soaked. If you are using a mister put it on a timer to run 5-10 min an hour and monitor placement of the nozzles.

- Heat lamps and mats. Yes it’s a million degrees outside but piglets still need a heat source they can get under especially at night and the first few days of life. Make sure the heat lamp is placed away from the sow and isn’t heating her up too. If your farrowing area stays warm put a regular light bulb in the lamp. Make sure the lamps are secured. In most instances there should also be some sort of mat in the crate for babies to get out of any draft coming up through the tenderfoot. Lamps should be set in the back corner of crates to teach pigs to get away from the sow and not sleep where they can get laid on.

- Water. Both sows and piglets need a source of clean fresh water at all times.

I’m sure there’s stuff I missed. Let us know if you need assistance or have questions.

A late Happy 4th of July and I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful day! I know I am!

Friendly reminder it’s July, which means it’s VQ bleeding time.

If you are in need of Transrite Sow Ultra or pig milk replacer I have some in stock.

Farrowing season has been here for some and I’m guessing is fixing to get hot and heavy for the rest of us shortly. If you get in a bind give me a shout/text.

Fair warning it appears that there will be more C-sections to be had this year, if that is an option do not delay in making the call.
