Rescue Update💜
We’ve recently seen another wave of surrender requests, but we’re still currently closed to taking in new surrenders. Right before summer began, we experienced a large influx, and unfortunately, we haven’t had any adoptions since the season started. We’re still over capacity and doing everything we can to raise more funds and get more adoptions before we’re able to welcome any more animals.
Saying no is truly one of the hardest parts of rescue work, but I have to make decisions with the best interest of the animals already in our care. We do have 1–3 tentative adoptions coming up, and if those go through, we’ll begin reaching out to those on our waitlist.
In the meantime, I’m sharing a list of other rabbit and guinea pig rescues that may be able to help. If anyone knows of additional rescues, especially ones within a 2-hour radius, please feel free to share in the comments. I’ve reached out to many, but haven’t heard back yet, so it’s possible they’re also at capacity.
We will prioritize chinchillas, degus, sugar gliders, birds, and other less commonly placed small animals, especially since we’re not aware of any Oklahoma-based rescues that specialize in them nearby (mainly chinchillas, sugar gliders and degus). Chinchillas in particular are animals we’re well-equipped to care for, as we already make everything they need 🐭
The majority of surrender requests have been for guinea pigs, rabbits and chinchillas. For chinchillas, we are the only one in Oklahoma I know of so we will always prioritize them. For emergency surrenders we will work hard to find fosters as we don’t want anymore being dumped like the ones we found in March 😔
Our long-term goal is to build a dedicated facility so we can expand and meet the growing need for small animal rescue here in Oklahoma, because right now, options are very limited.
