PASTURE TALK
WARPAINT: Memorial Day for the humans! But let’s not forget our four-leggeds who contributed to America’s freedom.
DAKOTA: And that starts with Staff Sergeant Reckless!
SHADOW: She was beyond amazing.
WARPAINT: Humans! Google anything about Staff Sergeant Reckless. You will be amazed.
DAKOTA: One epic story is about her carrying weapons to the front and bringing back wounded Marines on her back.
SHADOW: Finally, she made trips on her own despite being shot twice, once above her eye and once in her flank.
WARPAINT: Us equines continue to serve in other ways such as Equine Assisted Therapy for veterans.
DAKOTA: Thank you to all the veterans for your service!

Her decorations include the Purple Heart (with 1 gold star), Presidential Unit Citation (with 1 bronze star), Navy Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (with 3 bronze stars), Dickin Medal (awarded posthumously), Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and the United Nations Korea Medal, two Purple Hearts,

PASTURE TALK
WARPAINT: Dakota, Shadow! I hear you guys had a “magical day!”
DAKOTA: You bet we did. It was our first visit to a senior facility this year. And some memorable moments occurred despite it was cloudy and cool.
SHADOW: We went to a small but beautiful place. We thought it would be a quiet but good day. But WOW! MAGICAL MOMENTS, OH YES!
DAKOTA: There was a beautiful little girl there. Elianna. In her motorized wheelchair she really took command. And she got up on me. She is soooo precious! We are glad we could put a smile on her face. And I will always remember her loving hugs.
SHADOW: She is a little power pack. A real go-getter.
WARPAINT: That’s so cool. And something about a Navy veteran?
DAKOTA: Yes, yes! He was really great. Spunky and lots of fun to be around. And he wore his U. S. Navy Veterans cap with pride.
SHADOW: We got next to him and both of us gave him a “kiss,” at the same time.
DAKOTA: Uncle says this picture will be a finalist for picture of the year, along with a couple of the pictures of Elianna. And it’s only our first visit.
WARPAINT: So you guys, along with the two Golden Retrievers, pulled off a great day despite cloudy, cool weather.
SHADOW: And we had our new young girl in our program, Natalie. She talked with the seniors and got to sit on my back for a while. She’s great! She’s going to come to a lot of our visits.
WARPAINT: All in all, a day of smiles, laughter, hugs, kisses and lots of love!
DAKOTA: No surprise ‘cause that’s what us equines do! We are ambassadors of love!

PASTURE TALK
DAKOTA: Hay guys. Uncle went to Crescent Cove’s “Happy Volunteer Week” Thursday night.
WARPAINT: Crescent Cove is one of only three hospice for kids in the country. They offer care and support to children and young adults with a shortened life-expectancy, and their families who love them.
SHADOW: We get to go entertain these wonderful kids and their families this summer.
WARPAINT: In fact we get to go two times.
DAKOTA: Yes! The first time they are having a camp for the families. And the second time it’s a “Back To School”event.
SHADOW: The humans who volunteer at Crescent Cove are wonderful….actually remarkable.
DAKOTA: They are passionate and deeply caring about the kids.
WARPAINT: Hay humans. Go to the Crescent Cove website and see the awesome work they do.
https://www.crescentcove.org
SHADOW: They have a beautiful facility and there’s a lake right there.
DAKOTA: Oh oh! Probably can’t take Franklin, our crazy duck.
WARPAINT: Oh yeah! He’ll look at that lake and………anyone ever hear the New York Yankees announcer describe a homer? He says, loudly, as the ball sails over the fence, “SEE YA!”
That’ll be Franklin when he first sees the lake: “SEE YA!”
DAKOTA: The volunteers at the gathering were upbeat. You could feel the caring in the room. Special, special individuals.
WARPAINT: And the staff members were soooooo friendly and kind. The love they express for the kids is heartwarming.
DAKOTA, WARPAINT & SHADOW: Crescent Cove! Love to all the volunteers and staff who do so much for the kids and their families!

PASTURE TALK
WARPAINT: Hay everyone. Thank you for the nice comments about our new picture on Facebook!
DAKOTA: Yes! Thank you, thank you.
WARPAINT: Lots of people know we are the founders of American Horse Rescue Network but wonder why our page name is Warpaint Wagoner.
DAKOTA: Short version everyone. Our human mom, Sherry Van Wagoner, rescued all three of us. She loved us and gave us a great home. But she got cancer and asked Uncle Daryl to take care of us if anything happened to her. Well, she passed away in 2009 and uncle took us from Arizona to Minnesota to live.
WARPAINT: Sorry to interrupt, but Minnesota of all places? Cold, colder and coldest. BRRRR!
DAKOTA: YUP! So uncle wanted to honor our human mom because of her passion for not only horses, but all animals. So after learning how to turn on a computer he started the page with Warpie’s name and her last name. Beautiful picture of her below. And April 27 is her birthday.
WARPAINT: We have been living in the frozen tundra since 2010, Gunner got here first, in 2007. Auntie Margaret, Auntie Janelle and Uncle Daryl are now our human slaves! LOL!
DAKOTA: There is a page, American Horse Rescue Network, but uncle hasn’t done much with it and people got confused between the two so uncle got our good friend Tammy to make the two work together.
WARPAINT: Why did it take uncle so long to do that?
DAKOTA: Well, uncle Daryl can be so slow, if he got into a race with an ice age he’d finish second. Haha!
WARPAINT: Onward! Mama Sherry always said, “You guys need a job!” So she would take us to visit older humans and sometimes little humans.
DAKOTA: So that’s what we do. Last year we visited a lot of places and entertained the senior humans and the little kids.
WARPAINT: Now it’s time again to get back to visiting everyone. Next weekend is our first visit to a senior home this year.
DAKOTA: We have many already signed up and many more waiting to set dates.
WARPAINT: We love doing this because equines have the ability to make people happy and in many cases change their lives.
DAKOTA: We saw a lot of emotional moments last year.
WARPAINT: You mean like the one lady who asked uncle if you were pregnant? LOL!
DAKOTA: She was blinded by the sun! Hopefully!
SHADOW: Hay guys! Don’t forget me. I made lots of humans smile and helped warm hearts.
DAKOTA: Absolutely.
WARPAINT: This year we are also going to work with the Shriners Childrens Hospital. We are going to put together a couple programs for them.
SHADOW: And we are going two times to Crescent Cove. They are one of only three hospices for kids in the whole country. One little girl wants to ride a horse so we are working on making her dream come true.
DAKOTA: We really look forward to those two places.
SHADOW: Some senior homes still require masks. So Warpie is ready to go. See the picture! LOL!
WARPAINT: This is cool! We are going to get really cool outfits to wear at the visits: matching colors for our halters, lead ropes and shoo fly leggings. And our halters will have our name on the nameplate!
DAKOTA: We need to get a name plate for uncle so he knows who he is! LOL!
WARPAINT: Mama Sherry was passionate about horses helping humans so that’s what we’re going to do. Not to mention Dakota loves getting treats!
SHADOW: You can scroll down and see great pictures and videos of some of our visits last year. We will be posting new ones, starting next week, weather permitting.
DAKOTA: The power of the horse: We heal humans with emotional, mental or physical issues, we entertain and we love!

GUNNER: Hay guys! Did you hear about our newest venture with AHRN?
DAKOTA: Are we investing horse treats! Sign me up!
GUNNER: No goofy.
WARPAINT: Well Gun Gun! Let’s go! What is it?
GUNNER: American Horse Rescue Network has become a community partner of Abijah’s on the Backside!
DAKOTA: Cool. Show the humans who they are and what they do! Incredible!
GUNNER: Here you go! (Picture of their logo below!)
American Horse Rescue Network has become a community partner of Abijah’s on the Backside gaining a mental health, equine experiential therapeutic referral arm.
Abijah’s on the Backside is an organization that partners with racetracks around the U.S. offering thoroughbreds a purposeful second career while addressing the mental health crises of racetrack stable workers, military, first responders, and the surrounding public by providing mental health equine-experiential therapeutic services. Abijah’s supports the training and educates mental health and equine professionals through a designation process to deliver this service specializing in the use of off-track thoroughbreds helping to heal first-responders and military. www.abijahsonthebackside.com
WARPAINT: This is wonderful!
GUNNER: This hits me in the heart. I’m a thoroughbred you know!
DAKOTA: Well gee! I think we know as for the last 12 years it’s a daily reminder! LOL!
GUNNER: Just making sure you know who’s boss! LOL back at ya.’
WARPAINT: And we are doing EAT this year!
DAKOTA: We get to eat? You mean we get to eat MORE?
WARPAINT: EAT! Equine Assisted Therapy……..not eat!
DAKOTA: Okay! So we get to EAT AND eat!
GUNNER: I better get in here! Let’s get back on the subject!
WARPAINT: Yes! And here’s more good news. Doing EAT for prison inmates we have received an endorsement from former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Tough on crime, yup, but sensitive when it comes to animals.
GUNNER: Yh, yes! Tough on crime. Like the time, Warpie, you stole carrot cake? Remember?
WARPAINT: No, don’t remember. Must have been another horse.
DAKOTA: Uh, Warpie. there’s a video.
WARPAINT: I’m so excited to be part of ABIJAH’S and other EAT stuff!
DAKOTA: Gunner, he’s smooth. Changed the subject seamlessly.
GUNNER: That’s okay. When he does an EAT session maybe we’ll leave him at the prison.
DAKOTA: Okay everyone. Stay warm! This Minnesota winter………..can’t say it. This is a family program!
