An excellent article on the issues our breed is facing. We never thought we would ever see LGD dogs in these numbers in crisis.

It is vital people understand the work involved to preserve LGD breeds in their original, stable, healthy form, and how much work goes into having these dogs on farms once they leave the breeder.

LGDs do not need to be taught how to guard, but they MUST be taught what to guard, boundaries around livestock, what the rules of their farm are and normal obedience and handling to be set up for success.

Since we are often in a position to educate and influence other humans, I thought I might talk livestock guarding dogs (LGD). Across the US, LGD are being surrendered and euthanized at an alarming rate [1]. The vast majority of these are big fluffy white dogs (Great Pyrenees > Maremma) which are the...

We love that we have such a large audience here on FB and we know some of you have dogs from other sources. We are just glad to have you join our conversations and our passion for Pyrs. 😄

For some, this might be your first winter with an LGD, for others you may still be newer to farming. Here are some notes for general LGD safety as Old Man Winter comes roaring in!:

-Do not use blankets or towels for bedding, dry straw only (not hay).

-If your dog is not mature or this is their first winter outdoors, their coat may not be built up yet for these temps! Do not assume safety.

-Puppies and seniors cannot regular their body temperature in these windchills.

-Ensure plenty of *thawed* water is available. Hydration builds and supports blood pressure. If you do not have a heated water system yet, get to Tracter Supply pronto.

-Add in extra protein and fat to their meals, not carbs. Focus on canned food, canned sardines or mackerel, dehydrated raw, etc.

-Even if your mature dog is not using it, be sure every LGD has adequate space out of the wind with dry straw for them to access as needed.

-Many Pyr mixes are mixed with breeds of short coats. They will never have the depth and thickness of the original correct coat. Do not assume safety.

-Check on your LGDs. Make sure they ok periodically. They are a valued member of your farm and livelihood, so treat them as such!

Is this….Winter? First snow of the season and it’s mid-January! Quite rare for Michigan. The dogs are happy. The chickens and humans not so much. 🐶🐔🥶

We cannot deny its beauty though. ❄️❄️❄️

Stay warm out there! And of course, please share pics of your Pyrs loving the snow. 😁

About Our Kennel

We are a small Great Pyrenees kennel located in Stockbridge, Michigan. Established in 1986, we have successfully produced generations of US & Canadian Champions, working livestock guardians and therapy dog and obedience title holders.

Our dogs are raised in our home on our 20+ acre farm. They are exposed to small dogs, cats, horses, chickens and occasionally other farm animals. Our focus in on the whole dog; quality over quantity. Health, temperament, and soundness are our priorities always. As members of the Great Pyrenees Club of America we are required to follow a code of ethics concerning the breeding, raising, sale, and health screening of our dogs. We have also achieved the AKC Breeder of Merit title. We strive to be good ambassadors for our wonderful breed by educating people about Great Pyrenees, heading the Michigan Great Pyrenees Rescue program and we have served on committees for the Great Pyrenees Club of America.

We hope you take a look around and enjoy our dogs as much as we do. --Denver and Brigitte Doxtator
