DIRT ROADS
A couple of weeks ago, we pulled out of a client's drive and I was absolutely weeping. You see, Jeff and I have been shoeing these two horses for Danny and Mary Davis for ten years. My son was a toddler the first time I drove down their road and theirs was a teenager. Now my son is a teenager and theirs has a toddler of his own.
I was crying because I won't drive down that driveway again to see my old pals, Pie and Breaker. Danny and Mary have sold their farm here and bought a beautiful place at Dime Box and are moving on with the next phase of their lives.
Shoeing country horses in South Texas is almost always hot and either too muddy or too dusty. It's hard work and a lot of the time, it's pretty boring. There are jobs that pay considerably better, offer benefits and security, but I don't know what else you can do in America that allows you to sit in the shade and chat for an hour every six weeks with folks like the Davises while you work on good, honest horses like Pie and Breaker. It makes every drop of sweat worth the effort, every dusty driveway worth going down!
I have one last job to do for Pie and Breaker-I need to find someone around Dime Box to take care of their feet, and most especially their mom and dad. Jeff Henderson, that's your old stomping grounds, do you know anyone?
