For those who have an intact (un-spayed) female pet at home, she could be at risk for developing a condition called Pyometra later in her life.

Multiple heat cycles (without getting pregnant) over the course of a healthy female's life create a thickened uterine lining. Nothing is really wrong with the thickened lining but if it begins to develop cysts (no symptoms), that environment can create a perfect home for bacteria. The bacteria take over...it happens quickly and many pet owners don't immediately discover what's wrong until...well, until pus is coming out.

Pyometra is serious and can be life threatening so if you've considered spaying your female in the past but haven't done it yet, give us or your local spay/neuter facility a call to discuss it.
