Team Highlight: Dr. Ashley Martin!

We were lucky enough to have Dr. Martin join our team in June of 2021. She's an NC State Grad and worked at a mixed animal practice prior to coming here to Stokesdale Veterinary Hospital. Her bio is below.

I will say: one of my highlights of working with Dr. Martin is that she has reminded me that every detail can matter. She's incredible with all trends and changes in bloodwork and is incredibly knowledgeable with veterinary medicine and has a knack for tough internal medicine cases. -Dr Price

I grew up in Star, North Carolina. Being raised in a rural area sparked a lifelong love for animals and agriculture. I went on to complete an Animal Science degree from NC State in 2015 and then continued on at NC State to earn my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2020. I spent my first year out of school working for a mixed animal practice in Yadkin County. I started working for Stokesdale Veterinary Hospital and Lewis Veterinary Clinic in early June of 2021. Outside of work, I enjoy horseback riding, art projects, and gardening. I also enjoy visiting family back home, as well as spending time with my dog, Jack. I would love to own a small farm some day

We are experiencing problems with Verizon and Spectrum Mobile customers calling in on our phone system. We have spoken with our phone company, it seems to be nothing on our end.
Some phones are able to call our cell phone at 336-643-7447.

WARNING: Video of choking dog. Distressing to watch as he was not sedated as he was already cyanotic (turning a bit blue) on presentation and needed to get the ball out prior to attempting any sedation. (But a good ending!)

We get many calls of choking animals and the vast majority of these are actually coughing and not choking. This was a true choke.

It is very rare to see a true choking dog as depending how much air they can get through: they don’t often live long enough to get to a vet clinic.

This video shows our team getting a stuck ball out of the throat of a particular dog that we all love using the Exterior Extraction Technique. It shows Ashley catching the ball before it hits the garbage.

We hope this video may someday save even one dogs life that is too far away to get to a clinic for help.

Shared with owner permission. Sound on video is not from camera footage. It’s in the background of recording from camera footage. There just happens to be a dog squeak when the ball comes out. Coincidence only!

Details on method here:

Hey all!!! Just a hugamongo thank you for being so patient and such amazing owners to be getting your loved furry cohorts care. We have small teams (splitting people up so less contact between each other too) and are trying to fit people in as medically necessary.

Don’t forget to call when you arrive and we will be out to meet you!

And we will stand a llama distance apart!

Hey all! We can't thank everyone enough for being so incredibly understanding as we adjust to trying to keep physical distances.

We are just adjusting to a new hospital and now have to adjust to trying to only see pets in the hospital and clients outside. (Picture a bunch of people opening 20 drawers and yelling "WHERE DID THIS GO?")
We will be having our Grand Opening moved to much further in the future when its safer to have lots of people come see our new hospital.

We have increased disinfecting protocols and split into "teams" so we have less staff in hospital at one time that won't have exposure to each other. We thank you for understanding in spreading appointments out to help with smaller staff in hospital at one time.

Due to spreading it out, we have extended hours 7 days a week. I'm so proud that at our staff meeting, our team decided to break up, and extend hours to be able to see your ill pets. They agreed to work early, late and longer on weekends during their previously free time. Another reason I always brag on the greatest teammates ever when other people complain about theirs.

Our main phone line will still only be on during advertised hours to keep things normal in that aspect. If you're asked to come in during an abnormal time and our phones are off, you will receive a back line number.

We will keep everyone updated as things can change daily.

Please keep safe, everyone.
Picture is not a good example of social distancing (if both were humans), but it's cute:)

Hey everyone! Revel here.

I visited the new facility today! I worked really hard and laid down in every room as these crazy people were moving stuff everywhere!

Good news though they should be all moved in by Monday afternoon! Unfortunately that means we are unable to see appointments this weekend.

BUT they have so many new and improved services!!! We will also be extending dental month out longer.

We will be having a grand opening in 4-6 weeks for all to tour!

New address: 7823 US Hwy 158 Stokesdale NC 27357.

We cannot thank the people who have been a part of this enough. Honestly; it has taken more than a village. Apparently it takes a village and some of the most amazing people around.

We are SO looking forward to seeing you!

Look at the progress at the new clinic yall! Should be just over a month!

I was walking through the new clinic tonight. Reflecting about what it takes to have it be built. Blood. Sweat. And Tears could not be more right.

The only problem is that Ive received several "Congrats" when people learn we are moving/building.

I appreciate it; but its not just ME. I think of our teammates. Right here; in the community. Those that stay late for your pets' surgery. Those that care about your pet like their own. They take their time with them. The times they have taken your pets home so they wouldn't be alone when they needed more care. (Always with permission! No, we dont steal pets; even if sometimes we wanna steal your cuties!)

I think about our community. Those that come to us and trust us with their family members. How yall trust to ask us to verify what you have heard from online forums or blogs, friends, etc. We so love you. We are so thankful that you have chosen us and hope to continue to earn your trust with our new capabilities at our new location. Yall are amazing.

Actual conversation from today:

Dr Scalise: Ive been told that.
Dr P: At least she's cute. I wonder which of my pets I look like...???

Sometimes I'm humbled by the amazing clients that we get to see on a daily basis.

Dear Client that cares:
Thank you. Thank you for choosing us to work with you as a part of your pet care team. Thank you for letting us try and help you in whatever way we can. We know sometimes you are able to do full workups and we love being able to do anything and everything we can to get your loved furry one back to their full health status. We also know that sometimes you cannot do everything and we are happy to walk you through your options available.

To all those clients that care about their pets and are trying, we love you. We cry with you during times of struggle, even if you don't see it. We are SO happy to see things go well and we text the whole team updates on our excitement. We are distraught at euthanasias, even if we know its the right thing to do. We know how hard it was to make that decision. We are just so lucky that you chose us to help keep them healthy while they were here.

We know how much losing a pet can hurt. They were there with you daily. Daily. Loving you with no questions. They don't care that you didn't shower and still smell like you worked all day! They don't care that you didn't comb your hair or care if your fashion sense leaves something to be questioned. They just want you and all that YOU entail! How awesome is that?

You are all awesome and thank you for choosing us!
-The whole Stokesdale Veterinary Hospital Team

Everyone please help us give a warm welcome to Dr. Scalise!

We know some people have been upset that our appointments have been booking fairly far out. We've added to our growing team and are pretty happy with our new teammate!

Dr. Scalise grew up riding horses from the age of four on Long Island. She knew early on she would pursue a career in veterinary medicine given her lifelong passion for animals. Dr. Scalise made her way down south and completed a B.S in Biology at the University of South Carolina. She then moved to the mountains of Tennessee to successfully complete her DVM at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Scalise has worked with animals all over the east coast and central US. Her love for all creatures big and small led her to Stokesdale Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Scalise’s special interests include Internal Medicine & Surgery, Equine Reproduction, Alternative Medicine and Avian/Exotic Medicine. She is Fear Free Certified, FEMA certified and has training in Dentistry. In her free time, you can usually catch her outdoors exploring with her dog, Raeleigh, visiting loved ones, or baking and decorating elaborate sugar cookie creations!
