Mustang Morgan’s progress!
Groundwork. If you don’t do your groundwork first your just asking for a disaster.
Every horse looks for someone to lead them, guide them, and help them manage in life. When we bring them into this world on our own, or in Morgan’s case, from the wild; we owe it to them to give it our best try. Our best at teaching them the ins and outs of what we call horsemanship.
Can I cowboy a horse? Absolutely. I’ve broke 90% of the horses I’ve shown and been successful on. Do I want to cowboy them? Absolutely not. I want this to be the easiest transition they can possibly have. When I think of the term “cowboy a horse”, in my book that means if sh*t hits the fan can you handle? Yes I can. That doesn’t mean let’er buck it out and hang on and it will eventually learn. Now does that method work. I’m sure it does for some people. It’s just not my style. I’m not getting any younger.
If I can take all the necessary steps before I ever swing a leg across their back, I usually can skip a lot of that. Not only for my safety, but the horses also. Lunging, saddling, standing tied, flexing, line—driving, etc. If I put all those together, which may take a week with some, a couple weeks with others, I can usually work out the kinks and the only thing I’m introducing new at that point is rider weight.
This video is proof. Two weeks of work on a horse that was pushy, wouldn’t stand tied, pulled back and broke halters and leads, and needed to earn respect; and this was our first ride. A nice walk around the outdoor arena, on a loose rein, relaxed, and willing to learn.
Now I’m not saying if you do everything right on the ground that you won’t have a hick-up in the saddle once the time comes. So let’s go back to talking about what my definition of “cowboying a horse”. When it all comes to a head and the horse gets excited and wants to buck, rear, or runaway; they have enough respect for that snaffle and know what pressure is to give me their head a

Oakley
Oakley has reached the end of her 30 days here. Started off by just being saddle broke and hopped on a few times. This mare is very sweet and willing to please but had no sense of lift or how to work of her haunches. She still has a lot to learn but will go home with her owners to continue her journey. Tip for the day: Always remember soft hands 👐🏻 and ride with a lot of leg 🦵!
