The open-mouth sniffing face is caused by something called the ā€œflehmen reaction,ā€ and itā€™s perfectly normal. When your feline friend takes a sniff and leaves its mouth open for a few seconds, itā€™s actually drawing air into the mouth and up into Jacobsonā€™s organ. This action helps the organ to process the scent more deeply than your catā€™s nose can and sends signals to your catā€™s brain. Usually, cats will have the flehmen reaction when sniffing urine or f***s from another cat, since these substances contain pheromones. Do your cats do this?

Did you know that Beaglesā€™ ears help their noses to smell? When drawn out, a Beagleā€™s ears reach the end of their nose. Their long ears actually help to catch scent particles and keep them close to their nose, which allows them to take in as much information as possible. Interesting, right? For more information on care for Beagles and other dog breeds, give us a call at (770) 498-5956.

Large breed dogs with deep, narrow chests are at higher risk of bloat, also known as gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV). When a dog bloats, its stomach twists and fills with gas, which can cut off blood supply to the stomach and spleen. Bloat commonly happens when a dog ingests large amounts of food or water too quickly. Know the warning signs and be prepared in case of an emergency. Contact us at (770) 498-5956 with any questions.

Panting is usually a sign that something isn't right with your cat. Cats only breathe hard with their mouths open when they are very stressed, extremely hot, or a disease process is occurring. Some degree of 'normal' panting can be seen in cats, but context is important if you suddenly notice panting. Give us a call at (770) 498-5956 if you're concerned about your cat's breathing.

Before you bring a large breed dog into your home, you'll want to make sure you're prepared for it. Due to their size, large and giant dog breeds need more food, bigger beds and toys, and higher medication doses. If you're used to small or medium-sized dogs, expect to pay more for dog food, supplies, and veterinary products. If you have any questions, please contact us at (770) 498-5956.

Regarding Hurricane Helene:

To keep clients, patients, and staff safe, we are closing at 4 pm today, 9/26. We will reopen tomorrow, 9/27, at 11 am. If you have an appointment for tomorrow morning, Christina will reach out to reschedule it for after 11 am. We know this is an inconvenience but we want everyone to stay safe and off the roads. Please do not risk your or your pet's safety.

Updates:

-With Dr. Michelle's accident and inability to work, we have had to cut staff back a little but, we are striving to make sure all patients are receiving the care they have come to expect and deserve.

-Dr. Michelle is up and moving but still in Scotland awaiting the all-clear to travel home.

-Thank you to everyone who has contributed to helping us find a way to transport her home safely; whether that is in hope, wishes, and prayers, or monetarily. We want her home as quickly and safely as she can get here.

-Dr Aisha will be in the office on Thursday, 10/3, and Friday, 10/11, to see patients.

-Dr Maria Davidson will be helping us out on Tuesdays for the foreseeable future, starting on 10/8. She is a great doctor who has trained in Chinese herbs and acupuncture.

- We are closing at 2 pm on Wednesdays until further notice.

I am asking everyone, again, to please remain patient with us and not yell at the receptionist if she can't fit you in where you'd like. Your compassion and understanding is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Loving Touch Animal Center
