The animal care team at Stone Zoo recently hid the bears’ normal diet (omnivore chow and veggies) in paper, boxes and buckets throughout their habitat so Bubba and Smoky could flex their natural foraging behaviors. You could say they were pretty "into" it 😉
We actually provide novel experiences and enrichment for all the animals in our care every day. So you never know what clever enrichment you might see when you visit the zoo. Plan a visit this weekend→ stonezoo.org

Can you tell Maple & Willow apart? Here's how
Keeper Tira works with the cougar sisters on a regular basis, and so she's kinda an expert at telling them apart. But for the rest of us, she has a few tips on how to differentiate Maple and Willow!

Wolf Awareness Week
We couldn't let Wolf Awareness Week pass without an appreciation post for our band of brothers. Craighead, Mittermeier, Lek, Carson, Goodall and Beattie are Mexican gray wolves all named for female conservationists. 🐺 And this species needs our help.
The Mexican gray wolf is endangered, and Zoo New England is an active part of international conservation efforts to protect this species. This year we're launching an exciting new initiative with partners in Mexico to work with ranchers south of the border to improve their willingness to allow wild wolves on their land. Given that the biggest threat to the recovery of Mexican gray wolves is the killing of wolves by ranchers to protect their livestock, the success of this initiative will go a long way toward helping the Mexican gray wolf come back.

Look who's all grown up! It's baby Silver, the prehensile-tailed porcupine. Must be all those healthy veggies she's eating.

Back Scratches for Rudy
Rudy and Kathy spotted turtles spent some time outside in the sun recently. Instead of basking, Rudy went straight for the back scratching. Yes, many turtles love back scratches!
Some folks might be surprised to learn that turtles can feel through their shells, and it sure looks like a back scratch can feel really good. Turtle shells, usually thought of as being separate from the turtle's body, are actually attached to the turtle's spine. The inside of the shell is made of bone and the outside is covered in keratin—the same material as your fingernails.
Perhaps those shells scratches are a similar sensation as when our nails are touched, we'd have to ask Rudy.
Enrichment looks a little different every day — that's the point. Come along as we show Kupa leopard tortoise some things she's never seen before.
