🔎PLEASE READ 🔎

We are working on a new project called Building for Barks. This project will help our local outside dogs get the proper dog houses they need. We all know how expensive dog houses can be. Well the dog houses we will be building will be free, but your always welcome to buy us a bag food or even donate some of your time in return!

Our goal is to get rid of all the blue barrels and inadequate shelter for canines in our county an replaces them with Building for Barks dog houses. This is for every dog owner in our county.

We have reached out to a few groups to help us with this project! If you are interested in being involved or donating supplies we will need, please contact us.

To help get this project started we will need

•lumber
•shingles
•screws
•nails

If you have any of these items laying around that you do not need please send them our way!!

We are excited for this project and looking forward to helping dogs and their family’s in need.

🐶TAZ🐶

Hi, my name is Taz!!

I was a stray pick up. I had a home…. They even put a collar on me, but they forgot to put their information on it. I couldn’t find my way back home but a nice Officer picked me up so I didn’t have to sleep outside. I waited and waited for my owners to come get me from my sleepover at the shelter. They never came... I guess I’m a shelter dog now.

The staff takes good care of me but I want a family to call my own. So let me tell you about myself!!

Not to brag but I am a handsome boy. I also have a goofy/crazy personality there’s no boring side to me. I will definitely keep you entertained. I am pretty picky on who I call my friends 🐶. I tend to play a little rough witch can get me into trouble sometimes. They call me dog selective whatever that means🤨. I just like to keep my circle small, less drama that way.

I am a active dog. I want a owner who will have time an space to let me run. I don’t get to run much here. The kennel manager finally got some free time to let me get some zoomies out today. I had a blast playing with her.

I am a 2 year old Staffie mix. I weigh approximately 60lbs.

Can I join your family?

In regards to the hunting dog found on Old 40 this week. The tracking collar was dead when we got the dog. There was no nameplate identifying the owner on the collar. We removed the collar to check underneath for information and could see faint writing that we could not read. This is why we showed a picture of the underside. We always encourage dog owners to put contact information on the underside of the collar as well as other attachments to the collar, in cases like this.

And no we do not have electronic collar chargers here as there are so many brands it is not practical.

However the collar was put right back in the dog. We certainly hope by sharing our pictures the owner will know where he is. But it is always a good idea to check with Animal Services when you are missing an animal. We are more than happy to return them home.

If you have additional questions about the law concerning hunting dogs, please feel free to contact us.

🖤RUE🖤

Hi, my name is Rue!! I came into the shelter as a stray on April 21st, 2023. My New Year’s resolution is to find a home before I hit 1 year at the shelter.

I am good with other cats 🐱. I also really love attention. I could stay cuddled up in your lap all day if you’d let me. I am definitely what one could say a attention seeker. I am a pick me girl!!

I am already spayed an have my rabies vaccine. I am now just waiting patiently for my forever home.

🚶‍♀️🐶WALK THE SHELTER 🐶🚶‍♀️

Part of our New Year’s resolution is to get the community involved more with our shelter. We are going to have “walk the shelter” day on the last Saturday of every month. Thank you Amanda D'Arcy for the wonderful idea 💡!!

That means our shelter will be open the last Saturday of every month from 12pm to 4pm for citizens to come walk our shelter dogs on our very own Jackson trail.

This will help get our animals more socialized and get some exercise they very much need. Maybe also help you with your New Year’s resolution or even find a new friend.

We appreciate all the love an support. Hope too see you all January 27th!!

🥳Happy New Years Eve🥳

We have some New Years Resolutions for our shelter.

We are going to work hard to seek your support when we move forward strengthening our county ordinances throughout the townships of Sussex County. By doing this we will eliminate unwanted animals being born to unhealthy mothers. It will decrease our necessary euthanasia of unwanted animals. Our aim 2024 by January 31st is to have all dogs registered with the county and optaining there county license witch is required by law. License are only $7 for the year and can easily gotten with a valid rabies certificate at the treasurer office. Kennel tags are still available for multiple animal family’s and hunt clubs.

For the year of 2024 we would like to…

•increase our adoption rate
•have the community involved more
•get more volunteers
•increase the following on our page
•do more adoption events
•post more reels of our animals
•make more connections with rescues
•adoption alumni page

We would love to hear some great ideas to help improve our shelter!!

❓What would you all like to see more post of ?

❓If we were to change our operating hours what would be best for you as the public?

❓Are there any other social media or websites you would like to see our animals posted on?

♦️"The red dog"♦️We have received many calls about the red dog in Waverly on the corner of Railroad and Chestnut. He wasn't always bright red and not exactly sure what he got himself into. We are still trying to catch him but he is smart and quick. Traps and treats are beyond this handsome red boy but we are still trying. He has a collar on with a broken tether hanging so someone has to be missing him! Any info would be greatly appreciated or if you recognize him and might know where his home is that would be amazing! Please share because you never know who might be looking for him and we would love to get him home.❤️🐶

One of our amazing volunteers vividly captured his experience of interacting with Betty White -- an affectionate, loving Pitbull who's blind and deaf, likely due to injuries from being used as a bait dog. Betty loves being near friendly dogs and people. She navigates the world surprisingly well, always seeking treats, sunbeams, and a kind touch. She needs a medical foster. Could that be you?
"I reach down and introduce myself to Betty White. Betty was transferred to us from another shelter; she is blind and deaf. No other information is known about her past life, but like other dogs that end up here in her condition, it was likely one of few comforts.
She bumps into several walls and with a small sniff my touch was accepted. A touch is everything, it conveys intention, it begins a connection. The wonders of hundreds of millions of years of neurological evolution to evoke a surge of something beyond an unconscious physical response… “a feeling.” We begin our conversation.
My hand grazes down her cheek and weeps for scores of downtrodden souls that came before her. Her face is rough, her eyes disfigured…a forgotten road to never be traveled again. I offer a few soft pitiful words. The subtle vibrations travel to her inner ear to provide some stimuli of a presence in her dark solitude. Her head raises to triangulate where the vibrations resonate the strongest combined with a few wet-nosed sniffs to assist.
Her coarse white coat is patchy and neglected. Like a brail tragedy, my hand transfers stories of nights alone chained to a lonely post. My fingers flip through her medical file and confirm her heartworm positive condition.
My hand briefly stops at her heart. She has a 6 of 6 heart murmur (the most intense) that will prevent aggressive heartworm treatment. My hand though, is ignorant to this language of the heart as it falls on my deaf touch.
I busily change her sheets; they are bloody from an open leg wound and chewed-off scars. She has a tumor in one leg; we still don’t know the results. I begin to make her breakfast—a mix of kibble, cooked chicken, canned food, and Fresh Pet. I imagine an empty colorless room and haze of smells emerge in an eruption of sensory bliss.
Starting now, she will have dozens of compassionate hands to listen to her story, clinch in her struggles, tremble with her sorrow. Whatever time Betty has left, it will hopefully be filled with a feeling she has never known—a sensation that can only be felt and falls short of description. She will feel the warm hands of sun rays in the grass and hands that hide tasty treats in their clutches. The world will not change for helping Betty, but the world will forever be changed for her."
