UPDATE: Due to the amount of progress that Cabbage has made with his training as of late, it has been decided that his euth date will be lifted while he continues to improve.

If you’re expecting a dog who will love you right away and accept all of the pets and cuddles that you desire, Cabbage is not for you. It takes lots of patience and a willingness to go slow and follow his lead if you want a chance of forming a strong bond with him. He will let you know when he’s ready to be loved- you just have to know how to read him and respect his boundaries. He may be slow to trust, but when he does, we know he will make a great dog for someone!

Cabbage, originally Savage, is a 1yo. mutt who found himself here for a rabies watch. His old owners were having friends over to the house, and they usually kept Savage shut in a room. No adult witnessed what happened, which makes this whole situation tough, but all they know is that somehow he had gotten out of the room, and one of the guests, a little girl, came out with minor injuries to her face. The incident was treated as a bite case, and he was brought into us for a 10 day rabies hold. The owners did not want Savage back at the end of that hold because of complaints from the landlord about his barking and threats of being kicked out, so they agreed to pay a relinquishment fee, and he has been with us ever since.

Cabbage has been struggling with kennel life here and has taken longer than most of our residents to adjust. When he feels cornered or pressured into uncomfortable situations he can become reactive if he doesn’t fully trust you. Being reluctant to enter a kennel has been the issue in question, and he has given warning bites/ nips to those who have attempted to remove his leash after guiding him into the indoor runs and kennel. This type of handling combined with the stress of confinement just doesn’t work for him, and he needs a different approach.

Despite his challenges, Cabbage really is not the “savage” that he was made out to be, and we know that it is possible for him to grow to trust a person given enough time and patience and even be receptive to training because he’s already proved it! Cabbage’s favorite person here has helped him open up in many ways and stay engaged during training even when a stranger or other distraction is nearby. He is learning “come”, “free”, and he hasn’t been taught the cue for “sit” yet, but that has become his go-to position when he’s looking for a reward. He’s responsive to leash pressure and has shown great promise this week while our trainer has been working with him on the “kennel” command. He’s catching on quickly to entering his run for a reward, so a smaller kennel like what someone would have in their home is teachable with the right steps in place. Training aside, Cabbage also really enjoys being pet, giving kisses, playing with squeaker toys, going for walks, and chilling right next to his favorite human- just calmly enjoying nature.

We have reached out to many rescues about Cabbage, hoping to transfer him to a facility that is better equipped to handle his needs, but most shelters are full or won’t take a dog with a bite history, and the rescues that are specifically dedicated to dogs with behavior challenges are full or have been non-responsive. His best shot as of now before his euth date on 7/16 is adoption. Cabbage needs an experienced dog person who knows how to read canine body language and is willing to take the time to earn his trust. Paying close attention and having the ability to decipher and pickup on cues that his body is displaying is an essential skill that you need to have if Cabbage is going to thrive with you. You must wait until he is truly comfortable, not just tolerant, before initiating affection or over-handling, which can take days. Moving slow and being patient with him will be so worth it to get to experience the fun, joy, and love of Cabbage when that bond has been formed! You just have to be willing and able to do it right and give him a fair chance.

ATTN: Cabbage is not posted on our website, but please don’t be suspicious. This is not a scam like some have thought regarding our website not always being up to date. Almost all of our adopters in the last year have found out about our animals through Facebook, so updating the website is often low on our long list of priorities day to day. Thanks for understanding.

Kong is outta here! 🎉 His adopters have been extremely patient with Kong and his timid nature. 🤲🏻 They know what it will take to give him the future that he’s been waiting for: structure, time, patience, and most of all- lots of love! ❤️ Thank you for giving Kong his second chance!! (and his very first toy just for him ☺️🦝)

And a big thanks to Martha Vielma for sponsoring Kong and contributing some money toward his adoption fee! 🙌🏻

The band is back! ⭐️🎵 A couple days ago, Eeny, Meeny, Miney, and Moe reunited for a day after spending 6 weeks apart in their 2 foster homes. 💞 They came together and released an album including their hit single “Finding Our Furever Home”- a song all about a journey through space and time 🛸🌌 all in hopes of finding a place that they can call home! 🏠 With Moe on the mic🎤, Meeny on drums🥁, Miney on guitar🎸, and Eeny on the keys🎹, this band of brothers is set to tour across hearts and make their hit song a reality! 🚌❤️

Also, kittens are BOGO 50% off! These bandmates would love to stay together, but perhaps some may be destined for a solo career.

BOGO 50% OFF 🐱💞🐱🏷️
Because of the abundance of kittens in our care this year, we are waiving our rule about single kitten adoptions in hopes of getting them out as quickly as possible. Less kittens means freeing up valuable resources which allow us to better provide for future animals who are in need. In order to reduce the risk of a kitten under 6mo. developing “single kitten syndrome”, we made a change last year to only adopt them out into homes that already have another cat. This season, we are stepping away from that rule, but we are making sure that potential adopters understand the risks of adopting a kitten who will not have another feline to play with.

Single Kitten “Syndrome” refers to a common set of negative behaviors that can occur in kittens who are living in a home without another cat to engage with. Cats are social creatures by nature who thrive off of playing, grooming, and cuddling with members of their own species. They teach each other what kind of behaviors are acceptable and provide one another with a constant source of companionship and exercise when the humans aren’t home- positively impacting their social, mental, and behavioral development. If a single kitten is not getting a regular amount of mental stimulation, excercise, or enrichment they can develop behaviors such as:

Biting/ scratching your ankles, hands, arms
Excessively meowing
Eliminating outside the litter box
Chewing, scratching, destructiveness
Full of energy
Clinginess toward humans
Suckling obsessively
Aggression

There are ways to curb these behaviors and allow your kitten to thrive in your home into adulthood, even without another cat by their side. Making sure they get plenty of one on one playtime throughout the day using interactive toys such as a teaser wand, is a great way to not only strengthen your bond, but to allow them to exercise their prey drive in a healthy way toward a toy rather than a human body part and express their pent up energy. Making sure that the kitten has access to lots of vertical platforms like a cat tree and scratching post enriches their environment and gives them lots of ways to explore and climb which is very important for them!

Above all, you need to be sure that your daily schedule and energy levels will allow you to dedicate enough time to interacting with and exercising your kitten to keep them satisfied and balanced. If you have applied to adopt a kitten in the past and were turned away due to not having another cat, please feel free to send in another application if any of these babies peak your interest.

Long overdue post, but we just wanted to say a big thank you to Ellen Smith for her generous donation of $200 that went toward Scuttle’s amputation! 🤲🏻❤️ He has healed beautifully and is even feeling well enough to make friends! Sebastian, who is FIV+, and Scuttle love to wrestle and play with each other. They make the cutest pair. 💞 Both are looking for their forever homes and are available for adoption! 🖤🤍 Thank you so much Ellen, for supporting Scuttle on his journey to a new home!🐾🐾
