Please make sure your gates are secure and your fence is secure. Please check before you let your dog out. Do not take your dogs out for long walks. They may get startled from the wind. Be aware of things blowing around.
The trees are very wet, there is a strong chance that limbs can come down. Please be careful and be alert.

Welcome 2025! (and so long 2024).....
Although 2024 had its share of highs, it also had its share of goodbyes and sorrow for me personally (and probably most everyone). I said goodbye to my longest (5 year) foster dog Hazel for whom I had so much affection. Sometimes we don't notice the days whizzing by, and think it will all go on forever. It doesn't... and maybe on this 1st day of 2025 we will all be more conscious of the "It Doesn't"....go on forever....and be present in each whizzing-by day. I hope!

2024 also gave me the gift of 3 very feral felines who had been at our shelter for far too long (being feral, they needed a barn home). Elsa at the bottom had had kittens and they all found wonderful homes through us. Maybe you even have one! Truth be told, I am just a "crazy-for-cats" lady and they all have become exceptionally friendly and they make my day! Every day.

I would like to extend a heart-felt thank you from all of us at Mansfield Animal Shelter. We couldn't, and no rescue or shelter could, do it without the help of you. 14+ years ago I walked into this shelter asking to walk dogs, having really no idea what that would mean to me. What it has meant is meeting some of the most generous, fun, hopeful, committed people on the planet; gaining confidence of my own with dog walking, exploring beautiful places with them, skill building so they find great homes, and finding forever homes for some of the best dogs I've ever known. It's also meant being asked to become the president of the Friends of Mansfield Animal Shelter and accepting. So for the past several years I have chimed in on the holidays and it occurred to me that you all may be wondering 🤔 who is Laura? Well, its me. So for all of us at FOMAS, thank you and we look forward to many new success stories with you in 2025!

We are so honored to have you as a part of our extended family, helping make the world a better place for animals in need.

On this Christmas week we saw two of our residents "Home For The Holidays" and into forever families. If there is ever a reason for the season, I suspect this would be one of the best 💛

Thank you for coming along for the ride. We wouldn't want it any other way, nor could we do it without you.

As the holidays near, we are seeing a lot of festive home decorations as we patrol the neighborhoods and visit with pet owners in need of our services.

While these decors are all lovely and seasonal (and some of the baked goods smell delicious) - please don’t forget that many of these plants, foods and decorations, are unsafe, or even quite dangerous for pets.

These hazards range from chocolate and bread, to tinsel and tree fertilizer, all the way to mistletoe and poinsettias!

Our good friends/colleagues at MSPCA-Angell have put together this great list of Holiday Hazards, in an effort to keep your pets safe and your holidays without incident. It is a worth-read as you prepare your homes for the holiday season.

Please also consider free-roaming cats and wildlife, when decorating and planting outdoors. Animals are curious by nature, which can place them in unknowingly precarious positions. Please report any animals to us that appear sick or injured.

In the event that your pet has ingested something unsafe, or even if you suspect that your pet has gotten into something harmful, please do not hesitate to call your veterinarian, or one of the outstanding emergency veterinary hospitals nearest to our community. We have provided some of these important phone numbers and addresses, just in case – but our hope is that no one needs them.

Perhaps you can print this page and keep it nearby as we further enter and coast through the holiday season.

Winter weather is most definitely here!
🌨️When coming inside make sure to keep your pet dry to avoid dry, flaky skin. Avoid frequent baths if you’re able to.
🥾Use paw protectants, booties, or pet safe salt whenever possible. Wipe paws after walks to keep them from cracking.
✂️Make sure your groomer keeps the trim long to keep your pup warm
❄️More dogs are lost in winter than any other season so keep your license tags on!

‼️‼️REUNITED WITH OWNER

We have had multiple confirmed sightings of a missing bull terrier in the Mt. Hope area of RT 89. This is a dog missing from Ashford, CT. She is extremely skittish and has now run off from sightings twice.
The owner is going out looking. Please call the shelter (860)487-0137 or owner with any sightings! The owner is Vicki (860)377-3484.
