🚨Dog Bloat Awareness🚨
⚠️TW⚠️
although this video is very heartbreaking 💔 we are very appreciative that the owner took time to spread awareness on dog bloat and the signs to look for!
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), bloat kills about 30% of dogs it affects, even after intensive treatment.
Bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a medical and surgical emergency that must be taken seriously by pet owners. Risk of bloat is often correlated to chest conformation, and dogs with a deep, narrow chest- tall rather than wide suffer most often from bloat. Males are 2x more likely to bloat than females. All dogs (not just big) can bloat.
Breeds most at risk:
- Great Dane
- St. Bernard
- Weimaraner
- Irish Setter
- German Shepherd
- Standard Poodle
- Doberman Pinscher
How bloat can be prevented:
- Gastropexy (a surgical procedure that tacks the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent it from twisting)
- Slowing the rate at which your dog eats.. for dogs that gobble down their food, it is recommended to use a slow feeder
- Waiting at least 1 hr before/after meals before physical activity (running, playing, long walks, etc)
Although a gastropexy can be costly, it is worth keeping your dog happy and healthy. Gastropexy post bloat is more costly, invasive, and has only about a 50% survival rate.
Please share to spread awareness! 🙏
