Do you guys remember Blitz, the newest member of the Search and Rescure Team? Well, she has started her training, and her handler, Emy, provided us with a video of her progress. We wanted to give you a sneak peek into the hard work and dedication that goes into training these incredible dogs. From puppyhood, these dogs and their handlers put in the hours. This video is an example of what Search and Rescue calls a Runaway - This is how we start our puppies for search and rescue. They use squeaky toys and food to get the prey/play drive going. One person will hold the puppy while the handler runs to hide. When the puppy gets to the person hiding, they receive big rewards and play. As the puppy progresses, the distance increases. Next, the puppy will do it blind, so they dont get to "see" what direction the person ran off to. The puppy develops subject loyalty and enjoys the "game" and rewards. Eventually, they are doing area searching! Dogs can be trained for live find, remains, and provide valuable help for families missing their loved ones.

Cats are the most at risk of our pets as eating birds is the easiest way to get infected. We would recommend keeping cats inside right now and not allowing them access to bird feeders. Dogs can be infected but not as common and signs are usually mild in them.

While the second chart shows that each is equally responsible, and this is seldom true, it does ring true that the reason for dog behavior can have many facets and therefore can be approached in a variety of ways to correct the undesirable behavior. If you need a behavior consultation to address any issues, please call our office!

We would like to remind everyone who comes into the office that all Dogs must be properly leashed; we recommend a slip lead, which can be provided if you need one. Flexi-Leashes should be in a "locked" position if they are being used. We know that your dog is friendly, however, you have to remember that many dogs at the vet are often afraid, injured, or sick; you would not want to go face to face with strangers at the human hospital in the waiting room, do not allow your dog to approach others in our waiting room! It can be stressful for the other dog who may not be feeling well, and we have had a few close calls with more reactive and less friendly faces.

That being said, all cats should also be in a carrier, crate, or any other form of safe transportation. Your cat wrapped in a blanket can easily escape your grasp when afraid, and we are very close to the road, as well as a busy highway. If you do not have a carrier to get your cat from the car to the building, please let the staff know and we can provide one to borrow!

It’s , so we want to provide a very clear PSA: Poinsettias are NOT deadly toxic to pets! They are only mildly toxic. We still recommend placing poinsettias out of your pet’s reach to avoid potential GI upset symptoms, but we want pet parents to be even more cautious of these more toxic holiday plants that deserve the bad rap!

We are excited to show off our newest member of our laboratory diagnostic tools, the Vetscan Imagyst!

Offering five testing capabilities on a single analyzer, Vetscan Imagyst® is the first and only AI-powered technology of its kind to provide specialist-level veterinary diagnostic results within minutes.

The staff had a great time during our training session with Zoetis, we appreciate that they took the time to work with us on how to prepare samples, and get familiar with the software and equipment.

We are thrilled to be able to offer our clients and patients the benefits of this particular diagnostic tool; it captures images of cells, and gives access to pathologists if needed for second opinions, and gives us results quickly, so we can have answers within a few minutes!

New Screening Gives Cats and Dogs Best Chance Against Kidney Disease

Here at Pocono Peak Veterinary Center, we see a lot of pets impacted by kidney disease. And we're not alone. In their lifetime, over 1 in 3 cats and 1 in 10 dogs will get kidney disease. Worse, they typically show no signs of illness until their kidneys have lost most of their function permanently. As pets age, the likelihood pets will develop kidney disease worsens. In fact, more than half of cats over age 15 are afflicted.

Now the IDEXX SDMA™ test, a breakthrough new kidney disease screening test available at Pocono Peak, changes that. With the IDEXX SDMA kidney screening test, we can detect this serious disease months to years earlier, when there is still time to do something about it. This is fantastic news, especially for our long-suffering feline friends, as the IDEXX SDMA test can detect kidney disease when much of a pet's kidney function is still intact. This gives us the chance to take action and give your pet the best shot for a healthy, happy, long life, even with kidney disease.

Without the IDEXX SDMA test, cats and dogs typically show no signs of illness until the disease has progressed to the latest stage. Cats, who suffer the most from kidney disease, actually hide disease as a natural defense against predators. While this serves them in the wild, it makes it very difficult for you to even know they are sick.

Because we are committed to providing the highest standard of care to all patients who come to Pocono Peak Veterinary Center, we immediately adopted SDMA screening as part of our routine wellness checks and for kidney disease monitoring. Don't forget to ask us about it at your pet's next checkup!

We are thrilled to be able to have the chance for our techs to work with Sonopath for the day! Ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool using low power sound waves to create images of the internal body structures, such as muscles, joints, and organs. It can help our team to diagnose numerous conditions and assess how well a patient is responding to treatment. Our staff takes continuing education seriously, making sure they are staying up to date on the latest advances in veterinary medicine, and today's workshop allows us to submit the highest quality images to the Sonographers for the most accurate interpretation.

This week we’re celebrating our veterinary technicians. If you see one, thank them for all they do for our furry children. It’s truly a calling and we appreciate all of their hard work, passion and compassion! 💕

We value veterinary technicians every day of the year and thank them for all they do - and that is particularly true during National Veterinary Technician Week.

Please join us in celebrating these important team members and honoring their commitment to compassionate, high-quality veterinary care for all animals. https://bit.ly/4gPoqI6
