😳FOREIGN BODY REMOVAL WITHOUT SURGERY!🤯 This patient presented to her veterinarian for a dental cleaning.🪥 While doing pre anesthetic chest radiographs🩻, the vet found a foreign body in the stomach!😲 In order to avoid having the patient go through an entire abdominal surgery to retrieve the foreign body, she was sent to me to have it removed via endoscopy!😃. The patient is still fully anesthetized for this procedure, however it is much quicker and less invasive than an actual abdominal surgery. After removal of the foreign body we were able to proceed with the dental cleaning. This allowed everything to be done with only 1 anesthetic event which is the best option for the patient. She did really well throughout the entire procedure and the owner now has the coin as a special keep sake of the incident!! 😆 My team and I find these procedures extremely fun and very rewarding🥰🐶 We’d like to send a special 🙏THANK YOU!🙏 to @gardensanimalhospitalpbg for the referral. 💓🐾💕 #vettech #furbaby #vetmed #dogs #pethealth #cats #animalhospital #stuartsoundanimalhospital #petcare #veterinarian

🐾The importance of ULTRASOUND🐾
This patient previously had a mass removed from the skin that turned out to be a high grade Mast Cell Tumor 👎🏼. With this type of diagnosis, we worry that the cancerous cells could have spread (metastasized) to other organs in the body. To determine this, bloodwork and imaging (radiographs and ultrasound) is required to look for metastasis. In this case, the patient had an abnormal looking spleen on her ultrasound 😕. These changes could be age related or a sign of the cancer. To determine this, we can take samples of the spleen as shown here to send to the lab. This will help us decide on what the best treatment plan is for the patient. 🩹❤️🩹🐶💕
🐾Prior to taking samples we surgically scrub the area to make things as sterile and safe as possible. The patient is also under deep sedation to ensure they do not feel pain or move during the procedure. 🐾
Fingers crossed the results come back normal! 🙏💕

🌟Fun fact: 85% of pets over the age of 3 years old suffer from periodontal disease❗️❗️
🐾Honey presented to SSAH for her annual exam in February and the only concern on her physical exam was grade 2 periodontal disease. Owner stated that he did smell a bad breath coming from the mouth but there were no other concerns. Honey was scheduled for her COHAT (comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment) and this is what happened!
First, Honey went through some pre-anesthetic testing including a physical exam, ECG and pre-anesthetic bloodwork. All of these tests were completely normal. Next, Honey’s IV catheter was placed to help administer medications and fluids directly into the vein prior to and during her procedure.
She was given a pre-op medication to help smooth her transition into anesthesia and help with any pain during the procedure. Once she was a little more relaxed, we gave an injectable anesthesia and then placed her on an inhalant anesthesia to maintain her throughout the procedure. Honey’s vitals were monitored continuously throughout the procedure.
Next, Honey had radiographs taken of her entire mouth, just like us when we go to the dentist! Her radiographs were perfect and there were no mobile or missing teeth. If necessary, we would have extracted any diseased teeth at this time – however Honey did not need any extractions (yay!) Lastly, the nurse finished the COHAT by scaling and polishing the teeth.
You can see her before and after pictures here!
Honey recovered very quickly from anesthesia and was ready to go home an hour after the procedure. She was sent home with dental chews, a toothbrush and doggie-safe toothpaste to help maintain the teeth as much as possible. 🪥🦷🐶

🚨 WE HAVE ENDOSCOPY!! 🚨
Did you know that our doctors can use endoscopy to help treat your loved ones. Watch as Dr. Lile and the team help a little one in need when he was choking on a chew/raw hide.
Whiley’s story 🐶- Whiley presented to SSAH very lethargic and constantly trying to hack something up. The team at SSAH took radiographs which showed foreign material stuck in his esophagus.
After diagnosing the problem, Whiley was immediately prepared for intubation as endoscopy requires full anesthesia.
As you can see, the endoscopy procedure was successful at dislodging the material and bringing it close enough to the throat to grab it with a separate tool called a hemostat. Without the visual aid of the endoscopy, Whiley may have needed a referral to a specialty hospital or surgery.
Whiley is now doing just fine and eating treats with ease. He is thankful for the SSAH team for making him feel better so quickly. 💕
⚠️Owners please remember to check the treats and chews that you are giving your loved ones. 🦴🦴
