Yesterday we said “See you soon!”; because it’s not goodbye, to our Head Technician Amber. You usually would see her bright red hair running around helping everywhere she could. She was an excellent team leader for our staff! We will miss her dearly, but wish her all the best in her new journey with her fiancé up in Boston! 💕👋

Meet Carlisle, a 3-year-old American Bully owned by Suffield Vet Technician Molly. Molly shares her story of Carlisle, their “beloved, genetic disaster”:

We purchased Carlisle when he was 16 weeks old from a breeder who neglected to perform proper health clearances or temperament testing on their dogs prior to breeding. These dogs were outwardly beautiful, UKC registered, and came with a large price, which implies quality, right? We fell in love with Carlisle blindly because of his cute face and sweet/shy personality.

When Carlisle came home, it was apparent he was terrified of the world. Noises made him pancake to the floor and it took him weeks to even try the stairs. We enrolled him in puppy classes immediately to help socialize and train him. He flunked out after 2 weeks because he refused to get out of the car and would bark at approaching people/dogs. We then enlisted a phenomenal behavioral trainer, Elizabeth Ingalls, who had us implement and practice very helpful training and management protocols daily. We consulted a Veterinarian who specializes in canine behavior and behavior modification medications. Our own Dr. Emilie Laston has taken a special interest in canine behavior and has advanced her knowledge on the topic in order to help her patients even more. Dr. Laston now continues Carlisle’s medication management and tailors his doses based on his needs.

On top of Carlisle’s fear, he is also an orthopedic mess. In his 3 years of life he has had countless sedated exams, radiographs, lab testing, CT scans, and specialty veterinarian consults to address his congenital orthopedic issues. Carlisle has had a multitude of treatments (including surgery) to aid in his comfort and mobility including joint supplements, advanced nutraceuticals, prescription diets, strong pain medication, cold laser treatments (hence the goggles in this photo), etc.

We have invested tens of thousands of dollars and endless hours and energy to get Carlisle to the point he is at today — a cuddly, active 3-year-old dog. We love him greatly but I would be lying if I didn’t say he is A LOT of work. In our family, when we commit to an animal, it is for life.

As much as we love Carlisle, I want his story to be a lesson for people who are eager to get a puppy without prior health clearances and temperament testing. Even more so the importance of early socialization, training, canine enrichment, household management, proper veterinary care, planning for the financial burden, and the commitment to the animals we acquire. My family is beyond grateful for all of my veterinary colleagues who have invested time and energy to make sure Carlisle has a wonderful life.

For being a prime example for not only making sure to have owners physically and socially pre-screen any pet they are considering purchasing or adopting, but for showing how dedication to the health and training of a genetically and psychologically disadvantaged pet can result in the best possible outcome, we are happy to name Carlisle our October 2024 patient of the month.

Beauty is in the "eye" of the beholder! Dr. Laston and the staff at SVH feel "Bibble" is a true beauty in our eyes!!

Dr. Laston brought Eyeris (more commonly referred to as Bibble) in for her annual exam today. Dr. Laston recommends that all pets, even if they seem young and healthy, should receive and annual exam and f***l test for optimal health!

Meet Rylee, a 1-year-old Scotch Collie, and our September Patient of the Month!
Rylee was evaluated at our hospital earlier this summer for what was noted as blood in her mouth. At her exam, Dr. Laston noted Rylee was lethargic, coughing up blood, and bleeding from her gums with no obvious injury or tooth disease. Dr. Laston suspected a potential poison ingestion. Dr. Laston transferred Rylee to a 24-hour ER for 2 days of intensive supportive care, and Rylee was eventually released with a good prognosis.
Rylee is a very lucky girl to have pulled through. For reminding pet owners of the risks of poisoning, we are delighted to name Rylee our September patient of the month.

Meet this old fellow, Yoda, owned by our veterinary technician Kathy Loughman. Yoda was born to a stray cat 21 years ago, in February 2003, along with his four siblings in a back room right at Suffield Veterinary Hospital. The Loughman children were youngsters then and Kathy let them pick out and name two of them: Luke and Yoda. (We have many great patients named for movie characters, but that’s another story.) Unfortunately, Luke died in 2015 at the age of 12 from pancreatic cancer, but Yoda lives on. As Kathy describes him:

“Ever since Yoda was a kitten, he has favored my oldest son and my husband, seeking out their laps whenever and wherever available. About five years ago, Yoda started losing weight despite continuing to eat well. Routine blood tests showed that his thyroid gland was producing too much thyroid hormone, ramping up his metabolism and causing the weight loss.”

There are several ways we treat hyperthyroidism in cats. Kathy first tried the prescription diet, but Yoda absolutely wasn’t a fan, so he was started on a low dose of the oral medicine, methimazole. Blood thyroid levels are monitored regularly, and the needed dose of methimazole often changes over the years. That was true for Yoda.

For being a great example of successfully controlling hyperthyroidism in kitties, and for being one of our oldest current patients, we’re proud to name Yoda our July Suffield Veterinary Hospital Patient of the Month.

Happy Spring! You may remember Miss Nani from a few years ago, when she became a member of Dr. Laston’s family. Nani has slid into her place within the family without missing a beat!

This spring, Dr. Laston decided to take the plunge into poodle dyeing, so she purchased a pet-safe dye kit and sent it along with Nani to her fantastic groomer, Amber, for a fresh new spring look. The results were better than anyone could have imagined. Nani has been the talk of the town, and she attracts fans wherever she goes.

You may also remember that Nani has a history of a heart murmur, which is of genetic origin. We are pleased to announce that Nani passed her annual exam with flying colors, although she said the essay portion of the test was excessive and unnecessary. Heart murmurs in dogs can be caused by many different issues.

To read more about Nani's story, see our website at https://www.suffieldvet.com/patient-of-the-month/
