Meet this old fellow, Yoda, owned by our veterinary technician Kathy Loughman. Yoda was born to a stray cat 21 years ago, in February 2003, along with his four siblings in a back room right at Suffield Veterinary Hospital. The Loughman children were youngsters then and Kathy let them pick out and name two of them: Luke and Yoda. (We have many great patients named for movie characters, but that’s another story.) Unfortunately, Luke died in 2015 at the age of 12 from pancreatic cancer, but Yoda lives on. As Kathy describes him:

“Ever since Yoda was a kitten, he has favored my oldest son and my husband, seeking out their laps whenever and wherever available. About five years ago, Yoda started losing weight despite continuing to eat well. Routine blood tests showed that his thyroid gland was producing too much thyroid hormone, ramping up his metabolism and causing the weight loss.”

There are several ways we treat hyperthyroidism in cats. Kathy first tried the prescription diet, but Yoda absolutely wasn’t a fan, so he was started on a low dose of the oral medicine, methimazole. Blood thyroid levels are monitored regularly, and the needed dose of methimazole often changes over the years. That was true for Yoda.

For being a great example of successfully controlling hyperthyroidism in kitties, and for being one of our oldest current patients, we’re proud to name Yoda our July Suffield Veterinary Hospital Patient of the Month.

Happy Spring! You may remember Miss Nani from a few years ago, when she became a member of Dr. Laston’s family. Nani has slid into her place within the family without missing a beat!

This spring, Dr. Laston decided to take the plunge into poodle dyeing, so she purchased a pet-safe dye kit and sent it along with Nani to her fantastic groomer, Amber, for a fresh new spring look. The results were better than anyone could have imagined. Nani has been the talk of the town, and she attracts fans wherever she goes.

You may also remember that Nani has a history of a heart murmur, which is of genetic origin. We are pleased to announce that Nani passed her annual exam with flying colors, although she said the essay portion of the test was excessive and unnecessary. Heart murmurs in dogs can be caused by many different issues.

Meet Daphne, a 14-year-old rescue dog that the Kawalec family of Suffield were fortunate to adopt when she was 8 weeks old.

Owner Claire shares: Daphne has lived her whole life in Suffield, enjoying the parks and trails for exercise. She enthusiastically greets humans and other dogs throughout our neighborhood. Daphne always brightens our day and has a tail that never stops wagging.

Early in 2023 we noticed our “Precious Princess” was losing weight and having nose bleeds and trouble breathing. We brought Daphne to Suffield Veterinary Hospital and that’s where the journey started. After evaluating Daphne, they suspected she had cancer in her snout.

When Daphne was first brought in to Suffield Veterinary Hospital with excess sniffling, Dr. Burke examined her and initially thought that her symptoms might be due to an upper airway infection or allergies. Then she developed nosebleeds, and head Xrays showed something dramatically changed in her sinuses and nasal passage.

For being a shining example that a scary diagnosis of cancer in a beloved pet can indeed have a happy outcome, we are delighted to name Daphne our May Patient of the month.

Meet Tiger and Toby, owned by mother Pat Roark of Suffield (Tiger) and daughter Jen Roark of Enfield (Toby). These two compassionate women have made it a policy to adopt senior cats that have somehow wound up in shelters, and give them the best senior years they can. One of the newer ways we can help geriatric cats is to consider using an innovative injection called Solensia which has proven to make a huge difference in the mobility and pain levels of arthritic cats. First introduced in the USA a couple of years ago, but available for longer in Europe, these are low volume subcutaneous injections given every 4 weeks which hurt no more than a vaccination. And the results are very impressive for most cats.

Last fall a similar monoclonal antibody injection for dogs called
Librela became available to our veterinary profession. Since it has become available, many of our senior dog owners report amazing
improvements in the mobility and happiness of their pets. And the veterinarians and staff members at your practice are experiencing the same dramatic changes in their own older pets. If your pet is moving more slowly, limping, having trouble on stairs or jumping up on furniture, it’s possible that this could make a major difference in the quality of their life. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you have!

Meet Naish, an 8-year-old Labrador, a beloved Canine Companion, and a faithful service dog to his owner, Thomas, a Windsor, CT resident. This match made in Heaven was made possible by Canine Companions, a service dog organization that has placed over 7,700 dogs since 1975. For so wonderfully representing the importance of service/companion animals, we are proud to name Naish our March 2024 Suffield Veterinary Hospital Patient of the Month.
