Nancy Binford and Thena Mae Farr fought to give women a place in rodeo.

Now, they are being honored together as part of the newest class in the National Rodeo Hall of Fame. They will be inducted during ceremonies here at The Cowboy on November 9.

We've been spotlighting all of the new inductees over the past few weeks.

Frustrated by the exclusion of women from most rodeo events except barrel racing, Binford and Farr founded the Girls Rodeo Association, which eventually led to equal pay for female rodeo athletes.

Binford, born in 1921 on a 10,000-acre ranch near Wildorado, Texas, returned to the ranch after earning her degree and began competing in rodeos. Farr, born in 1927 near Seymour, Texas, started riding at age two and competed in barrel racing by age 10.

In 1947, Binford and Farr organized the Tri-State All Girl Rodeo in Amarillo, Texas, drawing large crowds. The next year, they established the Girls Rodeo Association, later renamed the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) in 1981. In 1985, the WPRA became the first women’s sports association to achieve equal pay for male and female athletes.

Today, it is the nation’s oldest female sports association and the only one governed by women.
