Heat Exhaustion is one of the biggest dangers during summer months.
It’s important, during the hot days, to be aware that our furry friends do not have the ability to sweat and cool down like people do.
Please be aware of the signs and symptoms to keep an eye out for if your pet is spending time outdoors this summer.

It’s recommended our furry friends get 20-30 minutes of daily activity at the minimum. We’ve put together a few at home enrichment activities for you to try to keep your pet both cool and entertained:

- Try hide and seek with different toys and treats in order to get your pet searching and sniffing.
- If you have stairs at home, you can try playing fetch at the top of the stairs, or a long hallway to tire out your pet. Be cautious if anything your pet may slip on!
-Freeze a Kong Toy and fill with pet-safe cheese or peanut butter for a snack challenge!
- Try Treat Dispensing Balls or Puzzle Feeders.
- Fill a Kid pool with either sand for our diggers or water for our swimmers!

We also love our local Pups and Pints
in Virginia Beach if your pet is a social butterfly! They have a great indoor/outdoor play area!

Comment below if you have any suggestions on what to do with your furry friends on summer days!

With the Heat Advisory for Hampton Roads we wanted to share how easily it is unfortunately for our pets to get Heat Stroke.

It takes no more than 10 minutes outside in weather that is 70 degrees for some of our pets to start getting heat stroke. It is SO important on these hot summer days to be conscious that our pets can NOT cool off the same way we do.

Tomorrow we will be sharing signs of heat stroke as well as some activities you can do inside your house for pet enrichment for all our high energy furry friends.

Make sure to check in tomorrow!!

Apollo was such a handsome boy to work with!

Shout out to our Dentistry team for always wowing us with their amazing work 🦷 ♥️

K9 Apollo is sporting some new titanium! Thanks to your donations through the Combat Dog Diesel Medical Campaign, Apollo was able to receive the crucial medical care he needed to get back on the street as soon as possible!

Teeth are the unsung heroes in the world of working dogs. From police to SAR teams, a dog's teeth are not just tools, but essential instruments of their trade. Imagine a police K9 without the strength to apprehend a suspect or a search and rescue dog unable to help pull someone out of danger. These canine professionals rely on their teeth for precision, strength and agility in every task they perform. Whether it's holding a suspect until officers arrive, or navigating debris to locate a missing person, a working dog's teeth are crucial to their success.

Shoutout to the for taking such great care of K9 Apollo and making the process so smooth!

It’s Baby Bunny Season, so a quick PSA from our team to you ♥️

Interesting facts:
- A rabbit’s mom will only visit a baby twice a day, in order to make sure no predators are able to track it back to the burrow.

- Wild rabbits leave the nest by the time they are 3 weeks old!

All this is to say: If you find a baby rabbit out and about, please leave it alone if it’s not injured! If you notice it is or if the burrow is destroyed by a nosy animal, you are always welcome to give us or Virginia Wildlife Response a call for some help with the next steps.

Thank you everyone for looking out for them, but we promise, they’re just independent little guys!

Bella was a 5 year old Staffordshire who came to our ER very critical.

She originally presented for being so weak she was unable to use her back legs and after our exam, she was found to have severe aspiration pneumonia and SIRS.
Bella spent 6 long days in our hospital fighting to get back to normal and back to her family.

Unfortunately, ER services today can quickly become very expensive, but through the tireless efforts of the ER Team and the generous donations of our community we were able to use our HAT fund to help Bella make a full recovery!
The HAT fund is nonprofit dedicated to giving life saving treatments to pets and their families who otherwise may not be able to afford it.

We’re so happy to report this is Bella a year after that stay with us! Her Mom reports that:

“She is back to normal, as mischievous and rambunctious as ever. But sometimes she just wants to cuddle. Her favorite activities now are running races around the yard with one of the other dogs, or rolling in the grass then laying in the sun.

I cant thank everyone at the COVE enough for saving her life; I know she was seriously ill and it was a close call.”

Thank you to everyone (staff and community) who continues to donate to our HAT fund and make stories like these possible. We are forever thankful that pets like Bella get a fighting chance ♥️

If you would like to partner with us, we are hosting a fundraiser tonight at Texas Roadhouse (see our story for details) OR if you’re a little further away and unable to attend you can donate here at this link:

We all enjoy a snack, but sometimes our furry friends enjoy them a little TOO much.

This sweet boy needed some help wiggling his favorite bone out when it got stuck mid chomp.

Wolf came in to our ER as a critical referral, having been hit by a car and was suffering from a pneumothorax (a collapsed lung).
Our team was hands on with Wolf for almost 8 hours, as he was intubated.

Through the incredible work of Dr. Thomas, LVT Alyssa, and VA Gwen, Wolf was able to be extubated and stabilized. His first reaction to being able to breathe on his own was to turn and lick the team who helped save him!

So thankful for our wonderful ER Team, and for the speedy recovery of such a seeet boy!

Ma*****na ingestion is seen very commonly through our ER and we just want to give some facts to help all our Owners at home:

- W**d is stronger to pets than humans, so ingesting a joint or being in a room where it’s smoked can cause these symptoms, but so can your pets laying on blankets or rolling on bed in rooms where it is consistently smoked.

- We promise, at the ER, we don’t care! Being honest if your pet could have been exposed helps our team triage easier, rules out more dangerous toxins, and ultimately saves you money!

- Often, pets can be tucked into a quiet space without stimuli and allowed to sleep it off. However, if your pet is experiencing extreme lethargy or having a hard time breathing, we always recommend calling Pet Poision Helpline at 855-764-7661, just to make sure there are no additional steps you need to take.

So often clients will tell us in the ER: “I don’t know how you all can do this every day”.

The truth is we look forward to the puppy days. The days that we get to help families, and deal with good cases, and experience making a genuine change.

We’re forever thankful to our ER Team and the family like community we’ve gotten to build here at the COVE. ♥️🐶
