As the seasons change, it’s easy to think that your pet’s preventative care isn’t as important—but did you know that many parasites are still thriving? Here’s why keeping up with preventatives is essential all year long:

🦟 Fleas are Year-Round Survivors!
Even in cooler temps, fleas can stay active. Don't let them hitch a ride indoors!

🕷️ Ticks Don’t Take a Break
Ticks are active 12 months a year, especially in autumn, when they hide in fallen leaves and wooded areas. Yikes!

🐾 Mosquitoes Are Still Buzzing
Heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquito bites, and it can progress quickly—often leading to sudden, serious health issues.

💩 Intestinal Parasites Never Rest
Tapeworms, giardia, and other parasites are always lurking. They spread through contaminated f***s and can lead to symptoms like diarrhea and weight loss.

Pro Tip: Keeping your pet protected from parasites year-round is usually less expensive and far easier than treating infections later. 🐕💊

❄️ No matter the season, stay on top of their preventatives. Your pet will thank you with wagging tails and purrs! 🐾

Here it is … our annual (critical) Halloween reminder that chocolate is toxic to pets, especially cats and dogs, due to theobromine, which they metabolize slowly. Please take note ... 🎃

⚠️ Symptoms: Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, restlessness, rapid breathing, seizures, or death.

⚠️ Amount Matters: Severity depends on the type and amount of chocolate relative to the pet’s size; even small amounts can be harmful.

⚠️ Prevention: Keep chocolate out of reach and educate others about the risks of feeding pets human food.

⚠️ Immediate Action: If you suspect chocolate ingestion, contact a veterinarian immediately for guidance. They may recommend inducing vomiting or providing supportive care.

Pets can’t protect themselves from poisons, but humans can. 🧡 Keep them away from Halloween candy … and out of the urgent care or ER this Halloween!

For some pets, wearing a costume may cause undue stress. We advise against dressing up your dog or cat in a costume … unless you know he or she loves it. If you do dress them for Halloween … 😼

👉 Ensure the costume does not limit their movement, sight or ability to breathe, bark or meow.
👉 Check the costume carefully for small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that could present a choking hazard.
👉Avoid ill-fitting outfits that can “catch” on external objects, leading to injury.
👉Have your pet try on the costume before the big night.

If he or she seems distressed or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting your pet wear his or her “birthday suit” or don a festive bandana instead. 🎃

We love this weather! With cool breezes and colorful falling leaves, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the season with your furry friend! 🍂 But ... while leaf piles may look inviting for pets, there can be "hidden hazards" you don't want them to touch, including:

👉 SHARP OBJECTS: Sticks, glass or trash can potentially cause cuts or injuries.
👉 PESTICIDES AND CHEMICALS: Leaves from treated lawns may contain harmful chemicals that can be toxic if ingested.
👉 MOLD AND FUNGI: Wet leaves can harbor mold or fungi, which may cause respiratory issues or gastrointestinal upset if your pet digs through them.
👉 INSECTS: Leaf piles can attract insects, including bees, wasps, or ticks, which could lead to bites or stings. 🐝
👉 ALLERGIES: Some pets may be allergic to certain types of leaves or mold, leading to skin irritation or respiratory problems.

To keep your pet safe, it’s best to check the area before allowing them to play in or around leaf piles. Or ... avoid these altogether and opt for safer activities like a game of fetch or a good walk!

For our Academy Animal Care family, whose pets have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, we now have a Memorial Rock Garden on our grounds. If you choose, we will arrange for your pet’s name to be etched on a river rock for you to place in the garden as a tribute to their life and cherished times. We invite families whose pets have previously passed to add their own self-decorated stones to the garden as well. We hope this will be a place of comfort and solace to all in the seasons ahead. 🧡

The cooler weather is a great time to enjoy outdoor adventures with our pets, but those pesky ticks and fleas can still be lurking. It's important to stay on top of preventatives to keep our furry friends safe. Regular checks after outdoor activities can also help catch any unwanted hitchhikers.🦟

We are lucky to have such a fantastic team at Academy Animal Care, and this year we’re excited to celebrate our lead receptionist, Cassidy, for her incredible 10 years of dedication! 🎉

A proud Suffolk native, Cassidy is an essential part of our staff, always ensuring that both our furry friends and their humans feel welcome and safe. When she’s not busy greeting pets and running the front-of-practice show, you can find her enjoying quality time with her family, their lovable Labrador retriever, and a beautiful horse! 🧡

Thank you, Cassidy, for all that you do and for keeping AAC running smoothly. Here’s to many more years together! 👏👏👏

Anyone who has rescued a pet knows how grateful these animals can be. You see it when they nuzzle, look into your eyes and accept your hug. And … it’s good for humans too. A positive relationship with a loving rescue pet can trigger a biochemical reaction in the body that reduces stress and makes you feel warm and fuzzy. Just like them! 🧡

“Remember Me Thursday” shines the light on the millions of adoptable pets waiting in shelters, along with those who didn’t get a second chance. If you own a rescue pet, please share your story here in the comments with . And if you are considering pet adoption, we hope you will reach out to any of the wonderful shelters here in Coastal Virginia. 🐈🐇🐕

As snakes prepare for hibernation, they may become more active now. Here’s how to keep everyone safe when you see them out and about ...

✔️ Out with your pet: Keep your dog on a short leash, and steer them away from holes during walks. 🐕
✔️ Spot a snake? If you see one, give it space. Snakes generally avoid humans. 🪱
✔️Snake bite: If you suspect a snake has bitten your pet, seek veterinary care immediately.⚕️
✔️ Non-venomous snakes: If you encounter one in your yard, gently move it away from your path. ⚠️
✔️ Venomous snakes: For venomous snakes like copperheads, contact your local Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation groups for safe removal. 🚨

Stay safe and respect wildlife! 🦉
