Pet Grooming Tips! 🧑‍🔬🐾

Dry skin and dandruff are common in colder months due to dry air. To prevent dry skin, make sure your pet stays hydrated. 💦. Use a moisturizing pet shampoo and groom regularly to remove dead skin and promote natural oils.

At Academy Animal Care, we offer bathing services, including both cleansing and medicated baths that remove dirt debris, and that doggie (or kitty) odor 🛁.

It’s never too early (or late!) to socialize your pet! 🐶💬 Help them feel confident and comfortable in new settings with these tips! 🌟

Start Early: Puppies and kittens are most receptive to new experiences between 3-14 weeks old, so introduce them to different environments, people and other pets during this critical period. And don’t forget the seniors! Older pets can also benefit from gradual socialization. 🐾

Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward your pet with treats, praise or playtime when they interact calmly with new people, pets or situations. This helps them associate new experiences with something pleasant, which encourages more confident and appropriate behavior. 🏆

Gradual Exposure: Introduce them to new experiences, people or animals in a controlled and slow manner. Start with less overwhelming situations and gradually increase the intensity or complexity of the social encounters. This approach helps prevent fear or anxiety from building up in your pet. 💖

Consistency and patience are key in the socialization process. So keep it up!

It’s great to hear that she enjoys her visits, even with the necessary shots ☹️! We love what we do and being able to provide consistent, compassionate care makes our day, especially for dogs entering their senior years. Consider increasing their grooming schedule. It’s bee-utiful weather for being outside with our pets … but please watch out for stinging insects that may draw their attention! Pets are naturally curious, and it’s best to keep an eye out to prevent a run-in with airborne pets. 🐝 Scope out your yard and have a pro remove or relocate bee hives, wasp nests and underground nests (made by ground hornets and yellow jackets). 🐝 If your pet is stung, see if you can remove the stinger, then apply ice to reduce swelling and provide a quiet distraction like a treat, belly rub or hug. 🐝 Remember, you may not witness the sting. Signs to look for include pawing at the face, swelling, redness, limping, chewing on a paw, or yelping or whining. 🐝 For a non-life-threatening allergic reaction (mild swelling or raised patches of fur with itch/hives), it is safe to administer human Benadryl at home. Dose Benadryl as follows, orally up to every 8 hours 💊 5-15 pounds: 12.5 mg (HALF of a 25 mg tablet) 15-35 pounds: 25 mg (ONE 25 mg tablet) 35-60 pounds 50 mg (TWO 25 mg tablets) 60 pounds or more: 75 mg (THREE 25 tablets) Seek emergency care in the event of swelling near the neck or throat, increased noise while breathing, changes in energy or responsiveness, vomiting or diarrhea associated with the allergic reaction. June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, and our local shelters have tips to help your new kitty acclimate to your home. ✴️ Before taking them home, safe proof your home or apartment by removing poisonous plants and putting toxic products out of their reach. ✴️ Cats like small, cozy places, so find a dedicated spot (and a soft bed!) so they can cat nap to their heart’s content. ✴️ Let them exit the carrier when ready and give them time to adjust to their new setting. ✴️ Be patient ... Taking your pet to the shore or pool this weekend? 🌞 👉 Always keep an eye on them. 👉 Remember, most dogs can swim, but not all enjoy it. 👉 Brachycephalic breeds, with flat faces, can tire more quickly when swimming (and may sink). 👉 Follow local laws regarding pets at local beaches, lakes and recreational areas. April is Prevent Lyme Disease Month, a reminder to check you and your dogs after woodsy walks! 🎋 In addition to causing serious medical conditions such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease, ticks can generate a disease known as ehrlichiosis, which can lead to ocular conditions with dogs including uveitis, retinal disease and corneal opacities. 😕 Make sure to keep up with their triple protection preventatives, covering flea/tick, heartworm and Lyme disease.
