As a general practice veterinary clinic, there are certainly cases that require more intensive care than we can provide, advanced care with a veterinary specialist, or hospitalization at a 24 hour emergency facility. For those cases, we are so thankful to the doctors, vet techs, and staff at all of our local emergency and specialty hospitals for the life saving care they provide.
That being said, when our clients call with sick pets, we always do our best to fit in their furry family members as quickly as possible. This morning, that urgent call came from our amazing friends at Portsmouth Humane Society, who had 2 sick dogs that truly needed same day care. One of those pups was in critical condition. Sweet Aslan was brought in to the shelter by a Good Samaritan who found him this morning nearly frozen to death in Portsmouth. When he arrived he was laterally recumbent, unable to move or stand, and not responsive to stimuli. His body temperature was too low to read, his heart rate and blood glucose were dangerously low, and his extremities and tail were so cold that we couldn’t even obtain a blood pressure reading. Any animal out in these freezing temperatures would be at risk, but his severe emaciation and lack of body fat likely made him even more susceptible to the conditions.
Our small group of staff jumped into action to provide the life saving care Aslan needed. As a result, we were running a bit behind for all of our scheduled appointments for the rest of the morning. We have to pause the story here to give a huge shout out and say thank you to all of the wonderful clients we saw today who were completely understanding and never once complained about their wait time. We feel so fortunate to have the best clients!
We are thrilled to say that Aslan improved with hospitalization throughout the day, and was able to be discharged into the care of an experienced foster. This poor guy still has a very long journey ahead of him, which involves a slow re-feeding plan. Please send him lots of love, good thoughts, and prayers that he makes a full recovery in the coming weeks. 🩷
(It wouldn’t allow us to include both photos and videos on this post, so check out the comments below to see videos of Aslan after he was stabilized and eating. 🥲)
