In honor of International Women's Day, we’re looking at some of the big picture numbers regarding the state of women in veterinary medicine. While there are more women in veterinary medicine than ever before, it’s important to note that this does not indicate gender equality in the profession.

Veterinary medicine has been predominantly female in the US since 2009. That trend is continuing, with 87.3% of current veterinary school applicants identifying as female, as well as 88% of veterinary technicians. More than 80% of the class of 2025 is female, but the leadership of veterinary schools—including 75% of vet school deans—largely identify as male.

Median income has increased for both male and female veterinarians, but the gender gap remains constant. The median income of female veterinarians in private practice grew from $79,000 in 2007 to $100,115 in 2021. During the same timeframe, male DVMs’ median income grew from $109,000 to $132,196.

A special thank you to all of the women who work tirelessly in this field, but are underappreciated often ❤

Today is World Spay Day, which is an annual campaign aimed at encouraging people to spay and neuter their pets and/or community cats. This not only helps prevent unwanted litters and reduces the overpopulation of homeless pets, but also lowers your pet's risk of cancer and increases their lifespan. This is a routine service we offer at Critter Care. Give us a call to get more information about spaying or neutering your pet today! 👍🏼

Due to potential listeria and salmonella contamination issues, we don't recommend feeding your pets Freshpet diets. There have been several recalls with this brand over the last few years. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products. There are also risks involved in humans handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to them.

We have had several clients who have fed Freshpet share complaints of several symptoms that subside after switching their pet's diet. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. If your pet has consumed Freshpet products and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

It's officially dental month! 🦷

Dental disease is the most untreated condition in pets. It can affect a pet's kidneys, heart, and liver. Brushing your pet's teeth daily is the most effective way to prevent dental disease, but professional dental cleanings are needed for severely affected teeth. A dental cleaning includes tooth scaling, polishing, and fluoride applications. You should have your veterinarian check your pet's teeth at least once a year. If your pet hasn't had their teeth checked recently, we offer a free dental exam and estimate during February. Give us a call to get your pet scheduled! ☎️

Happy National Chocolate Cake Day! 🍫

A friendly reminder that chocolate is toxic to your pets! Ingesting chocolate can lead to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, restlessness, tremors, and in severe cases, seizures, and even death. The darker the chocolate, the higher the toxicity level and the greater the potential for harm. If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, immediately contact your veterinarian and an animal poison control center!
