I haven’t been going much with trade show season in full swing for Streakin B Art but at 2023 winds down we were proud to get the news Josey Butler and her daughter of Once in a Blu Boon, Candy Blu won the Limited Hackamore year end in the Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association. Look for Ramona and I in the Limited Open Bridle starting with the Fort Worth Stock Show as well as Red Horse Remix and Frosted Fling in the AQHA Senior Barrels during the times even challenge. Ramona won the fence work and was second in the junior reining at the East Texas Stock Horse show in Sulphur Springs TX over the weekend. Exhibit A as to why it takes a village to keep a performance horse healthy and happy and it’s imperative your Vets and other Equine Professionals work together and consider what each other has to say. AND why it’s so important to form a consistent relationship with your care providers so they know your horses and aren’t just an injection or an X-ray to them.

A couple weeks ago our daughter’s horse started refusing to accept the bit. Something that’s never been an issue as he usually reaches for it. The other night he sat back when I went to bridle him. Again not an issue he’s ever had. His teeth are up to date all normal things checked off. I had my friend and Equine Professional Chiropractor Shawna Turner Supple Steeds Wellness Specialist out to adjust horses Monday and she pointed out there was entirely too much fluid on his TMJ as she adjusted him. I took him with me to our vet’s at Mid-South Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery today and Dr Dalton Pate pulled an insane amount of fluid off his TMJ. This horse lives the good life as a kids horse and spends most days in the pasture and X-rays revealed nothing abnormal thankfully. Thanks to some of the Equine Medical Industrie’s best we got him some relief.

Dr Dalton even took the time to check out our rescue Barn Sparrow for our daughter 😉

This past weekend our daughter competed on a horse we trained from day one in her very first legit reinwork portion of a cow horse show. We had a few nerve caused hiccups but she completed and remembered a very tough pattern and nailed lead changes from a large fast into a small slow change! 😳 You just think it’s satisfying to ride one’s you’ve raised and trained till you watch your kid take them over. MartinisinTraffic by Traffic Guy Stallion out of a stakes producing daughter of First To Flash was shown as a 3 and 4 yr old in the Working Cow Horse by Josey and and is a money earner inspite of being bred to be a world class barrel horse. He runs a beautiful pattern but has shown the nature of a kids horse so we’ve declined to push him to go any faster. My heart swelled seeing the pride of accomplishment on her face after their run together. I swear the horse was smiling too. God bless the ones who live the kids 💜

One of the biggest mistakes people make and I confess to making it on this filly is not putting enough pressure on a talented easy young horse when not working the barrel pattern.

This daughter of Champion stallion Highest Fire out of a 1D, Pro Rodeo, and Futurity money earning daughter of SunFrost has been a quick study from the get go. Easy to get broke, easy to start on the pattern. All star potential. When the run started hitting her it didn’t seem to be an issue till last week. A slip on the first caused her confidence to plummet and I realized I don’t think I’ve ever put this mare in a bind. I’ve never loped half circles at speed and asked her to collect and roll back. She’s always been a super star and I skipped the most important thing we can do to set them up for success. Hold her accountable. Today as she stands here and catches her breath we are playing catch up with this oversight. Today we aren’t working the barrels I might go around one barrel if it’s in my way but today she’s being asked to let me push her without a barrel to turn on her own or a cow to make her rate. Today if go around 3 barrels it will be to cool off at a walk. The barrels will be a place to relax for a while. Tomorrow she’ll be a better horse and 2 weeks from now she’ll be ready for more speed.

Genetics are so powerful. I was blessed to ride and win on this son of JL Dash Ta Heaven’s mother. Her name was Nonstop Bug she’s also the mother of our Red Horse Remix. When she was a baby she would get mad when you pulled on her but wanted you to constantly hold her…. but not pull just hold… It was a fine line. My favorite thing to do was hang a bigger bit than she needed on her and change speeds without loosing forward motion till she relaxed and stopped pulling and fighting with me and let me handle her without holding her. She hates spurs… so I rode my biggest pair on her when schooling, she didn’t like the split reins dangling so I rode her in ones that drug the ground. She got over all of it. This c**ts the exact same way. I like my horses to run in there and hold themselves up and turn on their own but if I ask for more finish I want them to take it and come not stiffen and push. I’m not smart enough for all that lift, pull, shape, I’d rather be along for the ride and ready to help than dictating where everything goes at Mach 2. I noticed the last time I ran this c**t in an exhib he was starting to climb and stiffen. The speed is getting to him. Today he got his momma’s go to bit and a lot of ranch pleasure type speed transitions. After a fair impression of a uncoordinated Lipizzaner he decided it was less effort to relax and behave and finished smoothly transitioning around the arena without arguement. A patterned horse isn’t a broke horse but a broke horse will always be easy to pattern.

Yesterday while taking an up close look at Carolyn Simancik Photography photo I noticed something… the cow is all but crawling in the bridle with my mare. I jokingly said on my personal page that everyone wants to have a Preston Williams Snaffle even the cows but this shot gives me chills for another reason. All my life I’ve loved great horses no matter what discipline. Number one thing is great horses love their job. And to watch a horse that loves its job is thrilling. You can build work ethic in a horse but you can’t grow them a heart. This big bay mare loves to go down the fence. This was her first turn after leaving the corner. She took a blow to the face from that cow as you can see in the second photo it didn’t phase her. She loves her job. If you have a horse that will run off the end of the world for you, you’re one of the most blessed people in the world. They don’t have to do this for us… they do it because they love it as much as we do. Happy Saturday!

The number one problem I see with barrel horse c**ts is they lack confidence in doing things fast away from the pattern. This is a maternal brother to my Red Horse Remix. This c**t is his mothers child. While he’s incredibly smart and trainable he’s faster than his mind processes sometimes. He’s been cruising a really nice pattern but before the wheels come off we are taking a step back from the barrel pattern and going back to the cows and no pressure and the fun of bullying something around. While I have zero intention of pursuing a reined cow horse career with him, Learning to handle himself in fast pressure situations away from the barrel pattern will only ensure when the pressure is on he knows where to put his feet when things aren’t set up perfectly. If he can fence and circle a moving object efficiently he can do any job we ask him too.

Good horsemen recognize a horse for what it is not what they think it should be. I always enjoy reading peoples thoughts on what other people in disciplines oughta ride. It all comes back to how they were started. Our cow horse babies get the same 60-90 days as our barrel horse c**ts but they end up with very different finishes in it. I’m biased to good horses, I don’t care what discipline it is. I appreciate a good barrel horse, a good Reiner, a good cutter, and a good dressage horse. We can learn something from all if we aren’t single minded about how we go about our routines.

Going from training barrel horses to for 20 Years to working cow horses has been an incredible challenge. I can’t say enough about this mare’s mind and try. Red Horse Remix winning the $1500 Novice Ranch Cutting yesterday in Sulphur Springs TX at the USCHA Show in Sulphur Springs TX marking a solid 71. Remix was gelded a month and a half ago and is just getting better and better. He has 4 foals coming next spring and a small reserve of frozen semen we will use on our mares. Incredibly proud of our home grown boy he's now a money earner in both the barrel pen and the cow pen.
Thanks to the people who keep him healthy and happy.

Red Horse Remix winning the Barrels for Laramie benefit yesterday by 3/10ths over a field of 100 other horses. The proceeds from this race went to help fund a service dog for a 3 yr old little girl with a very rare disease called INAD. Our 3 yr old stallion Red Horse Remix working a cow at the last OkSHA show. When we started him we wanted a well rounded stud. Having trained his mother and rode several by his father we knew this was possible. He will continue cow horse training but look for him at barrel Futurities and rope horse Futurities in the future.
