A good informational piece on how genetic disease works in dogs, this is why DNA Screening is important.

A puppy will always recieve 2 copies of a specific gene, 1 from the sire and 1 from the dam.

A clear dog has no adverse copies to give so they can only pass on a clear copy.

A carrier has 1 clear gene and 1 affected gene, they have a 50/50 chance of passing on either gene to their offspring.

An affected dog has 2 affected genes and can only pass on an affected copy.

This is why 2 carriers, 2 affected, or a carrier and an affected ideally should not be bred together, unless there is something substantial to off set the risks of creating affected offspring.

Most adverse genes require 2 copys to result in medical symptoms, some require only 1 copy or the symptoms may be exasperated with 2 copies.

This is why DNA testing is so important in all breeding programs.

You have a breed that was known as early as 1860 for it's intelligence, gentleness, loyalty and uncompromising courage and strength in the face of danger.
You have a breed that was bred to have no trouble continually moving with a comfortable lope all day. Every day.
You have a breed that doesn't care about the weather, and has worked everywhere from Antarctica to the hot dry plains of Texas.

You have a breed that is known for incredible energy and intelligence and also being one of the most destructive dogs there is when those aren't taken care of.
You have a breed that you thought you knew what it took to raise one, and was still surprised. And still got another one.
