E-collars and recovery suits keep our patients from causing further irritation to surgical sites or affected areas during the healing process. If your animal is having surgery or won’t stop licking, chewing or scratching we always offer an e-collar to take home or you can purchase a surgery recovery suit if that seems like a better option for your pet.
If your pet is licking or scratching at a surgical site it can cause inflammation, redness and irritation, discharge, and they can even reopen their incision. If you notice these symptoms occurring, reach out to your primary veterinarian!

Pet hurricane/storm preparedness‼️

With the storms approaching, here’s some tips to keep your animals safe!
Make sure to provide any outdoor animals with shelter and if not bring them inside your home if possible. Secure all doors and gates for the ones that like to run when they get scared. If your animal is microchipped, make sure to have their microchip number. This is valuable information to help locate your animal if you get separated in the storm.
Having food, water, necessary medications, vet records/contacts, recent photos of your pet and a first aid kit are great ways to prepare for a major storm. It is very important to stay calm! Your pets feed off your emotions, if you are panicked so are they!
Storms are scary especially for our four legged friends. Comfort each other and stay safe during harsh conditions. If you notice any prolonged behavioral changes, injuries or sicknesses contact your veterinarian. Stay safe everyone! 🐾🩵

Hey everyone, it's Fun fact Friday!! Did you know that splenic masses are one of the most common internal masses we find in older dogs. The way we diagnose splenic masses is by using an ultrasound machine. We often find these splenic masses incidentally while ultrasounding for other abnormalities, such as urinary tract infections or stones. These masses are very dangerous since they often go undiagnosed with no clinical signs until they rupture. The spleen is a very vascular organ and when these masses rupture, they can lose a lot of blood internally and need emergency surgery, often with a blood transfusion, to treat.

Clinical signs to watch for at home if a splenic mass ruptures is a distended abdomen, pale gums, lethargy, weakness and difficulty standing, and labored breathing. This is a life threatening emergency, so call your favorite vet ASAP if you notice these signs!

Since these masses can easily go undetected, we are always happy to add an ultrasound screening onto your senior dog annuals. You are always welcome to schedule an ultrasound exam separately as well! Call our clinic if you have any questions, want to schedule an ultrasound or add an ultrasound to your upcoming appointment, or if you notice any of those clinical signs.

Say hello to Sadie. She recently got diagnosed with diabetes. She came in today to recheck her Blood Glucose to ensure her insulin dose was still keeping her regulated. With these cases you'll often see patients showing signs of increased thirst (polydipsia) and increased urination (polyuria). With diagnostics the common indicator of diabetes is glucose in blood work along with glucose in the urine!

Extra fun fact: stressful events can make blood glucose spike in both cats and dogs! This is why a urinalysis to confirm diagnosis of diabetes is so important!

Meet the staff Monday!
All of our long term clients are very familiar with these wonderful ladies. For our newer clients… Meet Lynn, Nancy and Dianna!
Lynn used to be a large animal technician and would scrub in for small animal Orthopedic surgeries with Dr Stewart on occasion! She started in 2004 at the very first clinic and has stuck with us ever since. Mrs Lynn is now in charge of our clinics inventory. Her favorite part about her job is being able to see all the baby animals. We also really enjoy bringing our patients to visit her in her office!
Dianna was a large animal technician to begin with and now she is reception. She started at the original clinic in 1995…WOW! Dianna’s favorite part about her job is the equine side and enjoys spending her free time with her personal horses. Keep a look out for her welcoming smile when you come and visit!
Nancy was a technician as well and she is now reception. Nancy started at the first clinic in 2004 as well and has worked with us on and off for several years. She is known as “Mama Nancy”. She enjoys using her 39 years of knowledge to help educate others. Nancy always has her hands full with her many cats. They often come to spend the day with us and give the best cuddles.
All three ladies have been here since the very beginning and we are forever grateful for everything they have done. They are the backbone of this hospital in so many ways. Give them lots of love and appreciation! Y’all have a great week!

Happy Tuesday everyone!

This is a friendly reminder to keep your pets on monthly flea and tick prevention. We offer Simparica Trio, Nexguard and Bravecto for dogs and Revolution Plus for cats. Fleas and ticks carry many diseases that even strictly indoor animals are at risk of contracting.
Fleas and ticks can make their way inside by attaching to your shoes, clothing, or other animals. These guys thrive in warmer weather. They can be active year found especially in the southern states.
Under the tail, inside/behind ears, around eyes, under the collar, under legs, between toes and even in the groin area are all places ticks love to hide.

Call us to get preventatives for your pet, or visit our online store to have the autoshipped to your house!

Have you ever seen a cat with extra toe beans?
This is called a Polydactyl cat. This condition is due to a genetic mutation. It can be found in various breeds. Believe it or not, polydactyl cats are pretty common. Being polydactyl typically does not cause any health issues or pain!

Fun fact: Polydactyl cats have been known to be great co captains! Sailors have claimed cats with extra toes were able to keep better balance than ones with normal numbers of toes!
