Controversial words of wisdom for the day;

There is a very fine line between spoiling your dog and making them think they are equal to you.

My dog is my friend. But at the end of the day, they are a dog and they need to realize I’m a superior being.

If they think they are equal to me, it can cause problems in training.

Here’s a short very simplified 3 page description of hunt tests and last calls approach to hunt tests.

I typed this to give clients a quick down and dirty overview of hunt tests so they can decide if they might be interested in running them. This is far from all inclusive.

If you think I missed anything huge please let me know.

So a new HRC club has opened up close to me. I am no longer a “nomad” dog trainer and I have a home club.

Our inaugural test opens up for entry on Tuesday. The test is the last weekend in September. Help us have a good one.

For my local friends that wonder what these dog games are that I play; here’s your chance to come see what it’s about.

*Early Entry for Members and Workers Opens Tonight at 7:00pm

*Regular Entry Opens Aug 13 at 7:00pm

“The difference in an amateur and a professional is: An amateur wants to hurry up and do advanced skills while a professional wants to master the basics.”

This dog here is a Hunting Retriever Champion, has 5 master passes and is running the fall grand.

Where are we today? On a 65 yard pattern field refining literal casting with factors.

Well unless you live under a rock you have probably seen the latest viral videos of animal abuse at the hands of “trainers.” Another black eye for our trade. I feel obligated to address the issue.

Unfortunately I have the distinct unpleasant experience of having a career in 2 trades that has a huge target on our chests due to horrible actions of a few. Just last night in my other job I had 3 cell phones shoved in my face.

While I do not condone the actions of these criminals that you see in the videos. Maybe there is another way to address this issue.

In every instance we just see a few second or minute clip of a severe instance of animal abuse. Nothing leading up to it and we don’t see the end. But why? Why is the person videoing and not intervening!? What led to the video we are seeing and was there things that the “videographer” could have done to prevent the situation from growing into what it became?

How bout instead of grabbing for the phone to catch that viral video, you go over to the abuser and say “hey I think the dog is confused or in panic mode, let’s hold up” Or “have you ever tried this……..” or “how bout we put him/her on the truck and let them cool down and then we will re run it.” Or “I know a drill to address that very issue.”

We as professionals have an obligation to start protecting the ethics and integrity of our trade. If we don’t the government is going to create laws that we might not be able to work with.

Got home at midnight from Columbia city Indiana where we ran Grassy Creek RC’s Master test. Rip and Ammo both came home with a couple passes.

Back to the grind this morning. Nothing complicated, working on obedience and precision Amish style.

Everybody wants to be a pro trainer until it’s time to put the work in. There’s no time for lazy. People will start duck hunting in as soon as 4 weeks. Hunt test season is now. The grand is in 10 weeks.

Do you know how to spell success?

I’m going to get on my soap box for a minute. Recently I have been seeing a lot of posts where people are pushing spaying and neutering at way to young of age. Before you run out and do that I urge you to educate yourself! Early spaying and neutering can have detrimental consequences on the long term health of your dog. Here’s a podcast from people way smarter than me explaining it.
