Heartworm Awareness Month Fact:
Year round heartworm prevention is recommended for both dogs and cats!
For dogs, we carry Simparica Trio which is a chew that is given every 30 days for heartworm prevention and flea, tick, and parasite control. We also carry ProHeart6 and ProHeart12. These are injectable forms of heartworm prevention which lasts for either six or twelve months.

For cats, we carry Revolution Plus which is a topical medication applied every 30 days for heartworm prevention, and flea, tick, and intestinal parasite control.

Heartworm Awareness Month Fact:
Heartworm prevention is 10-15 times cheaper than heartworm treatment! Heartworm treatment in dogs can range from $1500 to $2500. Unfortunately, there are no approved treatment for cats.

Annual heartworm screening is recommended to ensure the prevention is working. We are starting to see resistant stains of heartworms in some regions. After infection, it takes six months for our tests to detect heartworms. By that time, irreversible damage has already been done to the heart and lungs.

With spring time and Easter just around the corner, we feel like it’s a good time to remind everyone about the dangers of having lilies in your home if you share it with cats.

Every part of the lily is toxic to cats, including the pollen. Lily toxicity can potentially cause irreversible renal (kidney) damage.

If you believe your cat has been exposed to (chewed on or ingested pollen) a lily species listed in the infograph below, contact Pet Poison Helpline or ASPCA Animal Poison Control. These organizations are staffed with veterinary toxicologists who can help your primary veterinarian formulate an appropriate treatment plan if needed.

Easter and Mother's Day are two of the most dangerous holidays for cats for one reason: lily poisoning. 💐

As a part of our No Lilies for Kitties educational campaign, we're kicking off the series by sharing which species of lilies are toxic to cats. True lilies (Lilium species) and daylilies (Hemerocallis species) are extremely toxic to cats and can potentially cause severe kidney failure. Check out the graphic below for examples, and visit the link below to learn more:

We had the pleasure of seeing Tova today to get her started on her puppy vaccines!

We first met Tova a few weeks ago when she was diagnosed with canine parvo virus. Parvo is a highly infectious disease that puppies and unvaccinated dogs can be at risk to catch.

We are happy that Tova was able to make a full recovery after several days of hospitalization and intensive care! Today, she got a clean bill of health.
