🐕Meet Benjamin, the adorable pup owned by our very own vet tech, Jasmine, who recently underwent foreign body surgery after swallowing a piece of his favorite toy. Even the most diligent pet parents can find themselves in a situation like this, which is why Benjamin's story is a great reminder of how easily things can go awry!
So, what exactly is a foreign body? 🧐
A foreign body is anything that shouldn’t be inside your pet’s digestive system, such as pieces of toys, clothing, or even food that can get stuck or cause blockages. In Benjamin's case, he accidentally ingested part of a toy, which led to him needing surgery to remove the object.
👩⚕️Foreign body surgery typically involves the vet making an incision in the abdomen to remove the item. The recovery process can take a few weeks, and Benjamin has to rest and take medications to help with the discomfort while Jasmine keeps a close eye on his healing. He’s doing great now, but the experience was a tough one for Jasmine, who always takes extra precautions with Benjamin!
Common foreign bodies include:
🟣Small toy parts (like squeakers or pieces that break off)
🔵Strings or thread from toys, collars, or clothing
🟢Bones or sticks
🟡Plastic, rubber, or fabric from chew toys
🟠Socks, underwear, or other small clothing items
To help prevent foreign body ingestion, here are a few tips:
☑️Supervise playtime, especially with new or squeaky toys.
☑️Choose durable, indestructible chew toys that match your pet’s size and chewing style.
☑️Store small household items like socks, shoes, and children's toys out of reach.
☑️Regularly inspect toys for any damage and replace them if necessary.
Even the best pet parents can experience these accidents, and it’s always important to be mindful of what’s around your pets. If you notice your pet showing signs of discomfort or trouble eating, don’t hesitate to reach out to your vet. We're so glad Benjamin is back to his hap
Did you know that playtime is vital for kittens' development? It helps them build coordination, sharpen their hunting instincts, and release all that kitten energy. Plus, it’s an adorable way to bond with your furry friend! 😻
Regular play keeps them healthy and happy—so grab a toy and join the fun!
