Based on how drop off went I knew Frankie was going to be a challenge on leash. She was used to pulling where she wanted despite her owners efforts. She is also a very busy pup so I knew focus would be a challenge too.

We got right to work with her and began some tune in exercises on leash. After a bit she began to learn to keep an eye on where I went. We threw in some slower paced walking to help her slow that brain down too. Bit by bit it has gotten easier for her each walk.

Friday fun with Frankie. She did great with my two, little annoying with her play style but these two dont mind.

We hope everyone has been out enjoying this weather.

Pajamas worked hard on his Place and stay. Not his forte at all as he can be a sweet but clingy pup. So we had to help him find some confidence and stretch that umbilical cord a bit 😉
Using raised surfaces can help dogs like this as it takes more effort to hop off and break command and more effort to get back up on there after you break too 😆

He figured it out, good boy!

We have been taking things slow with Frankie as she settles in this week. First order of business for miss Frankie is an introduction to leash guidance and pressure.

We took walks around the yard and upgraded her collars to a safer martingale and slip chain. She has a habit of trying to slip her collars to avoid doing things, such as getting on the dog cots. So we worked her through her drama and showed her the cot wasnt going to eat her. We did some quick on and offs and walk overs but we also took time to wait her out until she relaxed more.

Miss River is back for another day of Dayschool. She gets to work Place while we do school. She isnt impressed but she is doing great! Stayed put even when I went to correct the other trainee for fussing in her crate. 👏

You wouldnt guess she was 6 and he 2 😆 must be genetic.

More tandem work with River and Pajamas. They did great heeling together. I made them wait at the gate at the end of the walk and allowed Oakley to go through ahead of them and they did amazing waiting as she went through.
At the beginning of training waiting at any gate or door was a big challenge for these two pups solo let alone together. So proud of the progress they made.

Happy Monday!
Meet the newest trainee, Frankie. She is a young husky/shepherd/pit mix who arrived for training this weekend. As you might guess given her potential breeds, she can be a handful.
She will learn all the things with a focus on heel work, place and dog social skills. We will also be teaching a solid recall so we can let her off leash to safely run and play as this is a big part of fulfilling that husky side.

Tug O War shenanigans with Camo, Oakley and River.
Pajamas just wanted to parade around and carry his toy.

One benefit to a vast majority of these dogs completing a training program with me is I know them quite well socially. We take it slow that first week or two when it comes to dog interactions but everyone often settles in enough to at least be out with my pack. And play is a part of training and being social for many when done in a balanced way.

Some get 1 on 1 with just me, some with just my pack, and some as you have likely seen get to play with a variety of dogs.
Toys are often a part of that as I encourage chase, fetch, tug. But I also have dogs who know they are not allowed to play with toys due to their tendency to get possesive which is counter productive to playful. They can still be around dogs as they play with toys, they still run and interact but it keeps their manners in line.
This skill doesnt happen overnight, again this is part of their training usually and it continues as they board with me later on. And the skill to recognize dog behaviors and work through them doesnt happen overnight for the human either. This is from years of training dogs, running daycares and boarding kennels and observing and learning. 😉

Shoot if you read all that you deserve a biscuit 😆

Thanks for trusting me with your pups 💜

Quick trip to Tractor supply for some chicken food and a new dog toy for the yard.
Pajamas was nerved out by loud trucks and the carts but he worked through it.
He could benefit from more outings to keep building on his confidence. He tries hard which I really like.

Working on miss River's down stay, one of my favorite commands. We added some extra challenge with Oakley around but she was a great example for her too.

River did great outside of trying to turn it into a belly rub session, which isnt allowed in Down. So we fixed that and she settled in just fine.

Rain or shine dogs need to get worked. So while it was still frigid out we took advantage of the sun to field trip Pajamas this week too.

We hit the park in search of birds with the crew and he was in search of goose poo too 😆. But after a couple reminders he heeled like a champ through the grass and did some picnic Place to take in the scenery.

Pajamas in action, he is doing well with his heel walk too. Next up is some tandem heel to prep him for walking with his sister Reese who came for training earlier.

River's walk has come along nicely. A relaxed heel isnt a herding breeds forte but she got the hang of it.

River took a field trip to the river.
She joined us for our last day of bird counting for the Great backyard bird count.

We practiced her Place work, heel in tempting grass full of tasty goose poo, down stays while we Identified a new to us bird (yellow rumped warbler) and overall had a great time together.

She has really come along the last couple of weeks.

We started some group Placr work with Pajamas and River this week. River proved solid on her Place command while others played... Pajamas has more work to do. Boys 🤦‍♀️ We will back up a step for him and have less action to work around next time. He will get it.
