This yellow cardinal is exceptionally rare, with an occurrence rate of just 1 in 10 million.

Typically red, this vibrant species occasionally exhibits yellow coloring due to a genetic mutation, making it an avian anomaly.

Michiganders Arlene and John McDaniel discovered this little bird at one of their feeders.

The mutation, known as a "knockout mutation," affects the DNA coding for two enzymes required to produce the cardinal's signature red pigmentation. A misstep in this two-step process results in yellow feathers instead.

Researchers first documented this phenomenon in 1989 when a yellow cardinal was studied in Baton Rouge. Since then, ongoing studies have provided insight into the genetic components behind this rare occurrence, offering a deeper understanding of the bird's dazzling deviation from the norm.

Ornithologist Geoffrey Hill, a professor at Auburn University, estimates the odds of such a bird existing are around one in 10 million. With approximately 50 million northern cardinals in North America, only about five yellow individuals are believed to exist at any given time.
