I do not have enough words to express my gratitude to Dr Melissa Adamson. I dont think I would have been able to go through this if it wasn't for her love and compassion.
There comes a point when you have to do what is best for your fur babies, no matter how painful this decision can be, as responsible owners we need to see beyond our pain.
Dr Melissa kindly and patiently walked me through this process. She understood my intense grief at a visceral level. Not only did she help my little Dachshund Rico but she also helped me in the most genuine gentle way. She was truly an angel!!!
I will forever be thankful knowing that my Rico is finally free, chasing celestial squirrels and lizards. I can only imagine my little trouble maker!!! The gief is heavy but I know I will see him when my time comes!!! Till then my love!!!🐶
Thank you Dr Adamson!!! you are a true angel 🌿

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand;
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years -
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come, so let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend
And please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve - it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years -
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

Our pets trust us to care for their health and happiness. 🐾 As they grow older, it's important to recognize when they may be in discomfort. IAAHPC Member Dr. Laurie Brush, DVM, CHPV, reminds us how vital it is to advocate for their comfort and well-being.

Dear Dr. Melissa,

I want to thank you again. My sweet 14 y/o basset hound Ellie was able to find peace at home with me. You were so thoughtful and caring about the entire situation. Although it was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make and a very sad day, you made sure I understood everything that was about to happen and was so empathetic about it. I’m so happy you provide this service to people. I miss Ellie everyday, but I know time heals. Please continue doing what you are doing. Having in-home services available to people in need helps so much with closure.

Sincerely,

Aurelio F

Determining our pets’ quality of life is often difficult. There are many factors that need to be considered and addressed. This diagram shows this well. Sometimes there may be room for improvement like with pain medications or additional support and care. Sometimes there is little QOL and our love for them can make it hard for us to see it. I offer free phone consultations to help navigate this often difficult assessment and decision process.

It is often hard to recognize especially chronic pain in our pets. They rarely vocalize when in pain like people do. It’s in their nature of survival to hide their pain. Sometimes just a simple change in behavior or decrease in activity is the only sign. It may not just be due to getting older as many people think. Often the best way to determine if a pet is in pain is to do a pain medication trial. It can be very rewarding and can improve their quality of life.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. Animals may be better at hiding illness or injury, but they experience pain just as we do. If you spot any of these common signs of pain from your pet, contact your veterinarian.
