Water is wet.

Dogs generally pull about 60 per cent harder on a leash when wearing a padded harness compared with a collar, even when the equipment is marketed as “anti pull” – putting the people walking them at risk of injury.

Some dogs – especially smaller breeds – pull with a force more than twice their body weight on the collar, potentially damaging their throats, says Erin Perry at Southern Illinois University.

“It’s really very shocking,” she says. “The dogs are almost choking themselves on that collar repeatedly. But the harnesses in our study just didn’t inhibit pulling in any way, and that’s definitely a wake-up call – especially because of the risk to owners.”

"You can never trust a dog" is something I was told recently.
Maybe trusting your dog means understanding their natural behaviours.

Dogs act like dogs and can only act like dogs. Don't set unrealistic expectations, and hope they won't do what they've been bred to do.

You can build trust by acknowledging their genetics and breed specific traits and treating them as the wonderful dogs they are.

We know first hand how easy it is to jump right into potty training and socialization. Oftentimes, this is when basic obedience can fall to the wayside. However, this is the best time to start building up your new puppy’s confidence— start your relationship off strong by teaching your puppy functional commands.

Level 1 Group Class: AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is a 6 week class designed for dogs with no previous formal training. We will use primarily positive reinforcement to teach the following skills: sit, down, stay, touch, come, leave it, focus, settle, how to politely greet people, how to politely greet other dogs and the beginnings of loose leash walking.

*This is an ideal class for puppies ages 12 weeks and older. 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗦 𝗦𝗜𝗭𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗧 𝟲 𝗗𝗢𝗚𝗦 & 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗦.

*REHOMED* 🎉

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲! 🌸🌿

Bramble is a 1 year old, female, spayed, Rat Terrier x Chihuahua mix (best guess). She’s been living with us for a few weeks now to work on training and socialization. Due to the progress she’s made in a few short weeks, we’re now putting out feelers to find her the perfect home.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲?
If you’re an experienced dog owner, Bramble is an easy keeper. Nothing about her is overly hard to deal with and she doesn’t pose a risk to society. Bramble loves her people. If you’re looking for a portable lap-size dog that wants to do anything and everything with you, she’s your girl! She loves walking, hiking and playing fetch or tug with her ‘baby’ (alligator plush). Because she’s young, Bramble thrives when she’s given clear boundaries. This includes tethered place time, designated crate time and gates/fences so she isn’t given the run of the place. She’s a young Terrier mix, if you give her an inch, she will take a mile. I will request that the new owners keep up with these practices, as it’s immensely helped her learn how to self soothe and settle.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱?
I will 𝙉𝙊𝙏 be placing Bramble in a home where the owner expects to frequent dog parks or just laze around all day. Bramble is not the most biddable dog. She will not do something just because you ask for it, so if you’re looking for that kind of behavior— you’re better off picking a spaniel or herder. Bramble wants to know what’s in it for her and then she’ll decide if she wants to partake. Bramble needs someone who will advocate for her space, just because she’s cute and small does not mean she enjoys random strangers rushing up on her. Bramble is able to coexist just fine with other dogs, she’s met and lived with my entire crew. However, I will not place her in a home where there is already another pushy female dog. Again, Bramble is a young Terrier mix, so she will push buttons, has prey drive and is not above taking cheap shots if she feels like she has a leg up.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀:
Sit
Down
Leave it
Come
Stay
Heel (work in progress)

𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱
• Sleeps through the night, no accidents during the day. She will circle around and sit by the door if she has to go out.

𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱
• Can be left alone for 6-8 hours, will also sleep through the night in a crate. Can use either a basic wire kennel or a plastic kennel.

𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀:
Walks well on leash with a micro Herm Sprenger prong collar, tasty treats and a positive attitude. She does not care about basic leash pressure on a flat collar, she needs a tool that meets her where she’s at. She’s unbothered by fireworks, loud sounds, thunder storms and most novel surfaces. Continued work on confidence building and exposure to new places would greatly benefit her. She’s been to the Park Point Art Fair, Canal Park, a few of my Group Classes, Home Depot and various breweries.

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 & 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀:
Spayed. UTD on shots via paperwork she came with. Microchipped through PetLink. Registered in the city if Superior. She tolerates nail dremeling and teeth brushing. Bramble eats once a day in the morning and gets 1/4C of *Redpaw Poweredge 32K.

*She would do just fine on any of their other formulas or smaller bags, ie. Redpaw X-Series Perform, 4lb bag https://www.hollywoodfeed.com/p/101162/redpaw-dog-food-x-series-perform

𝙄𝙣 𝙖 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙, Bramble’s new owner would be a young 20 or 30-something who is eager to learn about dog behavior and wants a spunky adventure buddy to spend their free hours with.

If you’re interested in welcoming Bramble into your home (for FREE, no rehome fee required), please message my business page or contact me via details below. I will be picky in the placement of this sweet pup and should any problems arise I will take her back. She deserves it.

PSA: Twin Ports community, STOP supporting local “rescues” that pull up TONS of dogs from the south. STOP supporting local “rescues” that constantly have puppies and love taking in pregnant females from various southern states then charging $600+ for said puppies. There are MORE than enough dogs in our immediate community that need your help.

"My dog doesn't like car rides."

"My dog hates the vet."

"I can't cut my dog's nails."

"S(he) won't eat her food unless I add a little [human food] to it."

"My dog hates other dogs."

"S(he) will *be fine* once s(he) gets used to you."

"My dog is afraid of [thing/place/person/etc]."

"My dog hates the crate."

"My dog can't be left alone."

With precious few exceptions, all of these things are completely avoidable, so they never happen or can be fixed with appropriate effort.

The reason these behaviors appear is because owners never thought they needed to condition the dog to accept these things. At the very first sign of protest by the dog, the owner stops whatever they are doing and the dog registers that protest makes what the dog doesn't like, stop.

The next time the owner reenacts the same scenario, the dog doubles its effort, perhaps even quicker, and the owner stops again.

It doesn't matter what it is, what the dog's takeaway from each encounter, is when I fight, I win.

It could be as simple as holding a puppy, or putting equipment on the dog.

Owners make these things a struggle and heavily reinforce the dog every time they allow the dog to escape or avoid consequence for refusal or failure.

By the time the dog is a practiced adult, there will come a time where these things will need to be done, and either the owner, a veterinarian, some other caregiver, will be the recipient of a fair bit of fury when the dog exercises his memory of fast refusals at the first whiff of conflict, weighing in at adult weights, and having formed adult opinions.

It doesn't take much to prevent these things, but folks have their work cut out for them when they try to remediate these issues after they have been hardened by lack of conditioning.

Your dog is more than capable of learning how to be confined, restrained, groomed, approached safely by strangers, travel, etcetera.

What stands in the way of where you are now, and success, is knowing what to do, how to do it, and the effort necessary to get it all done.

We're here when you're ready.

So many people get dogs on impulse. Craigslist, parking lot, shelter, or rescue. Their intentions may be good, but impulse buying a pet that will live up to 10+ years is not.

I have nothing against rescued dogs. Most of the dogs I work with are. However, many rescue dogs end up being rehomed several times. They are dumped, surrendered, and put down. Bad genetics, backyard breeding, and people not doing any research is the direct cause of this. I'm not saying you can't find an amazing family dog in the shelter. I run into them all the time. I am saying that research goes a long way when bringing home a new furry friend.

If more people researched pets before getting them, we wouldn't see every single shelter and rescue overflowing with dogs right now.

Put the time into researching a commitment. Just like you would (hopefully) any other big investment.
