🐾👃Sniff sniff…👃🐾

Have you ever been on a walk with your dog and wondered why they are so obsessed with sniffing everything along the way? This isn’t just them trying to see what something smells like out of pure curiosity- they are learning and experiencing the world! 🌎

While humans rely mostly on their sight to help interpret things around them, dogs use their noses. Humans only have 5-6 million scent receptors compared to dogs who can have 100-300 million! In fact, about 1/8th of their brain is known as the “smelling” section. That is about forty times larger than humans! 👃

Dogs use their scent receptors to help better understand exactly what they are sniffing. Ever wondered why dogs sniff each others rear ends when first meeting? It’s their way of gathering intel about each other and better understand the other dog. With just a few sniffs, a dog is able to know the health status, gender and emotion of the other. They can even still obtain all of this information by sniffing a spot another dog was in hours before! 🐕

Gathering information isn’t the only benefit to a dog sniffing. Not only is it a form of communication but it is also a great way for your dog to stimulate their brain. About 15 minutes of sniff time can equal up to an hour of running in regards to mental stimulation. It is a great way for your pup to reduce stress and emit dopamine! 🧠

So next time you are on a walk with your pup and they stop to sniff- let them! Allowing your dog to sniff to their hearts content will keep their brains happy and help them keep up on the neighborhood gossip!

🐾🐶 Fun Facts About Pugs! 🐶🐾

They’re small, squishy-faced, and full of personality — we’re talking about PUGS, of course! 💕 Whether they’re snorting, snuggling, or strutting their stuff, these little charmers always bring the fun. Here are a few fun things we loved learning about pugs:

🐾Royal Companions – Pugs were once the prized pets of Chinese emperors! Later on, they were named the official mascot of the royal House of Orange in Holland after Prince William the Silent was saved by his beloved pug Pompey from an assassination attempt. After this, pugs became quite popular in Europe. 👑

🐾A group of pugs is called a “grumble”. 🐕🐕🐕

🐾Chinese breeders purposefully bred pugs to have wrinkled faces to resemble the Chinese character for “prince”. 🤴

🐾Pugs were originally called “Mopshonds” up until the 1700s. A popular pet during this time was the Marmoset monkey, also known as the “pug monkey”. Because they shared similar facial characteristics to pugs, the name of the breed was gradually changed. 🐒
