These are our available female F1b Standard Bernedoodles. Leia, Padme, and Ahsoka Tano. Both Leia and Padme have curly coats, and Ahsoka has a wavy almost straight coat with weak furnishings. Weak furnishings will mean her furnishings will take a bit longer to come in, and she will shed a little more, but her coat will be a bit easier to maintain. “Furnishings” = fluffy mustache & continuously growing coat 🥸

While furnishings are just ONE of the many genes we consider when trying to produce those characteristic low shedding doodle coats, they’re an important one! ☝🏻

However, not all furnishings are created equal! There is a spectrum of (phenotypic) expression of furnishings and while geneticists have identified some of the variants, we still can’t always predict how a puppy will look as an adult based on DNA tests! For example, the puppy above does NOT test as Fw! 🧬

For anyone in the market for a doodle, here’s the quick and easy version… ⬇️

Some doodles have “weaker” furnishings resulting in a less fluffy coat. In some cases, they make look smooth faced while they’re young. These “late bloomers” tend to get fluffier over their first year, tend to have a slower growing coat, and are slightly more likely to shed. They do still need brushing and haircuts though! If you don’t mind a little shedding, don’t rule out a weakly furnished pup if they’re otherwise a great fit for your family! 💞

If you’re looking for a dog who will shed the least amount possible, ask your breeder if the puppy has TWO copies of furnishings! This is arguably MORE important than generation or texture (I.e. curly vs wavy). 👩🏻‍🦱
