We have the most dapper patients! đź’•

Brewster came in for a re-check ultrasound with Dr. Laurie Monhait, DVM, in our Internal Medicine department outfitted in a tie and shirt collar. He had been experiencing polyuria, bilirubinuria, and decreased appetite in July. With the support and guidance of our team, we are happy to report that Brewster's recent ultrasound looks good, and he is improving at home!

Check out Dr. Tiffany Longo, DVM, Intern at our sister hospital, Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, shadowing Dr. Ware, DVM, ACVR-RO, in Radiation Oncology!

Part of the OSVS Internship Program is learning not only how to be strong Emergency Clinicians, but also well-rounded doctors by working alongside our specialists. Dr. Longo spent the day in consultation, computed tomography planning, and radiation treatment, and even learned how to perform the daily Q/A procedure on our Varian Edge Linear Accelerator (LINAC). This cutting-edge technology delivers precise cancer treatments while protecting healthy tissue.

The Edge LINAC allows us to:
âś… Track patient movement in real time for unmatched accuracy
âś… Use high-definition imaging for precise tumor targeting
âś… Deliver rapid treatments with minimal side effects
âś… Treat a wide variety of cancers with advanced precision

We’re proud to offer this advanced technology to our patients and equally proud to provide hands-on learning opportunities for the next generation of veterinarians. 💙

Pictured here is Dr. Lange, VMD, utilizing our ultrasound machine in the emergency room. 🩺

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses sound waves (not radiation) to create real-time images of internal organs. It helps veterinarians quickly and clearly evaluate the:
🔹Kidneys
🔹Liver
🔹Gallbladder
🔹Pancreas
🔹Spleen
🔹Vessels

Ultrasound is essential in diagnosing conditions like pancreatitis, enlarged organs, kidney or bladder stones, and portosystemic shunts. It’s also a valuable guide for precise biopsies. Best of all, most pets require little to no sedation, making the process quick and low-stress. 💙

Only the best at Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services

It takes a special kind of person to be a veterinary technician at Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS). 🔹Transfusion administration
🔹Monitoring EKG, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and more

They combine this technical expertise with tender, attentive care, always on alert for subtle changes that could impact a patient’s recovery. At BSVESS, our technicians don’t just treat patients; they nurture them, ensuring every pet receives the safest, most compassionate care possible.

IVECCS 2025 was a success!

Our team traveled to San Diego for the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium (IVECCS), and it was an incredible experience. It allowed us to highlight the training and career opportunities we have available at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists and Bay State Veterinary Specialists! We loved connecting with colleagues in Emergency and Critical Care, catching up with past interns and residents from around the world, and sharing in the passion we all have for what we do.

From learning new tips and tricks to discovering innovative products and connecting with like-minded individuals, this conference continues to inspire us and elevate the care we provide to our patients every day. đź’™

We understand how overwhelming surgery can feel for both you and your pet. There are so many factors, and it can be a very emotional time. At Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services, our surgery team is dedicated to providing the safest, most advanced care possible. All surgical patients are given a complete pre-operative assessment and receive the benefits of advanced continuous monitoring equipment as well as a multi-modal and proactive approach to pain management. Post-operative care and monitoring are provided 24 hours a day by our highly trained team.

Pictured here is Dr. Lori Agulian, DVM, DACVS, sharing a tender moment with her patient, Jazzy, as she recovered from a right caudal lung lobectomy. The best news, Jazzy is now home and doing remarkably well after such a serious procedure! đź’™

This is us Thursday!

Meet one of our dedicated ER and ICU Technicians, Sarah McGregor, CVT. Originally from Bristol, Rhode Island, Sarah began her journey in veterinary medicine studying pre-veterinary at the University of Rhode Island, thinking she wanted to be a veterinarian. While working at a doggy daycare and general practice, she discovered her passion for the hands-on aspect of patient care. She transferred to New England Tech, completed their 18-month veterinary technician program, and after passing the VTNE, officially became a CVT.

Sarah completed a 10-week practicum at Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS), where she quickly realized it was the right fit for her and was thrilled to join the team full-time. She now divides her time between the ER, ICU, and floating/overnight shifts. On ER shifts, she enjoys the fast pace of triaging cases, while in the ICU, she values the chance to provide detailed, thorough care to her patients and follow their progress. For Sarah, working in emergency medicine is both challenging and deeply rewarding, offering constant opportunities to learn and grow beyond her earlier general practice experience.

Outside of work, Sarah lives in Bristol with her boyfriend, their two-year-old Beagle, Millie, and a Holland Lop rabbit, Cannoli. She loves spending time with Millie, whether walking, hiking, or exploring dog-friendly spots like C**t State Park and the bike path. In her free time, Sarah also enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, and crocheting.

Veterinary Specialists: A Quick Guide for Pet Owners

What is a veterinary specialist?
Just like in human medicine, there are specialists in veterinary medicine with advanced training in specific areas. Veterinary specialists are highly trained veterinarians who play a vital role in your pet’s healthcare team. In addition to providing advanced care within their hospitals, many specialists also lead research and clinical trials that pioneer new diagnostic tools and treatment options for animals.

What is the difference between a primary care veterinarian and a veterinary specialist?
Both primary care veterinarians and veterinary specialists complete a minimum of four years of veterinary college and earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) degree (or equivalent).

To become a board-certified specialist, veterinarians undergo additional, highly focused training that includes:
🔸A one-year internship (or equivalent experience)
🔸Two to three years in an approved residency training program
🔸Meeting caseload and specialty training requirements
🔸Passing rigorous board examinations

Upon completion, they earn the title of Diplomate in their specialty.

Which specialties does Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS) have?
At BSVESS, we are proud to offer board-certified care in:
Medical & Radiation Oncology – Focused on the development and treatment of cancer in animals.
Internal Medicine – Diagnosing and treating complex or chronic GI, respiratory, kidney, autoimmune, and systemic diseases.
Emergency & Critical Care – Addressing life-threatening illnesses and injuries 24/7, while caring for hospitalized patients.
Surgery – Performing orthopedic, soft tissue, laparoscopic (minimally invasive), and emergency surgeries.

When might my pet need a veterinary specialist?
Most pets begin care with their primary care veterinarian. If your pet develops a condition that requires advanced diagnostics, specialized treatment, or surgery, your veterinarian may recommend referral to a specialist. Specialists work closely with both you and your primary care veterinarian to ensure the best possible care for your pet.

Do I need a referral to see a veterinary specialist?
In most cases, yes. A referral from your primary care veterinarian helps ensure that:
🔹Common conditions are first addressed by your veterinarian.
🔹Your pet’s medical history, test results, and treatments are shared with the specialty team.
🔹You are directed to the right specialist for your pet’s specific needs.

This collaboration between your primary care veterinarian and the specialist ensures a smoother process and the best outcome for your pet.

Thank you so much, Jess, for sharing your experience with Boomer’s care.
