X-rays are a key part of the advanced diagnostic services we provide to quickly and safely assess your pet’s health. This non-invasive imaging allows our team to closely evaluate the chest, abdomen, and musculoskeletal system and plays an essential role in identifying the cause of your pet’s symptoms.

Here are some examples of how we use X-rays to care for your pet:

🔎 Diagnosing diseases
Our clinicians use X-rays to help identify conditions such as pneumonia, heart failure, and certain cancers, allowing us to begin appropriate treatment as quickly as possible.

🫀 Assessing organ health
X-rays help evaluate the size, shape, and position of vital organs—including the heart, liver, spleen, and kidneys—to pinpoint abnormalities or detect early signs of disease.

🧩 Locating foreign objects
If your pet may have swallowed something they shouldn’t have, X-rays allow us to locate foreign material within the gastrointestinal tract or other areas of the body.

🐾 Detecting bone and joint problems
From fractures to joint issues or bone abnormalities, X-rays give our emergency and specialty teams the information they need to provide appropriate care—whether medical management or surgical intervention.

💧 Identifying urinary issues
X-rays are commonly used to diagnose bladder and kidney stones, as well as other urinary tract concerns that may be causing discomfort or illness.

Meet Lindsey!

Lindsey is a 7-year-old Airedale Terrier. Lindsey was referred to our Radiation Oncology department for postoperative radiation therapy following the removal of a mast cell tumor on her right carpus. Under the care of Dr. Ware, DVM, ACVR-RO, and our dedicated radiation oncology team, she completed multiple radiation treatments like a true champ.

At her recheck appointment, Lindsey was eating and drinking well, full of energy, and showing no complications. We’re happy to share that her radiation site has healed beautifully!

Bentley returned for his 2-week post-operative recheck following his left Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy performed by Dr. M. Faulkner Besançon, DVM, DACVS. He is looking great and continuing to do well—leash walking appropriately and already showing improvement compared to before the surgery. Dani, the surgery technician who assisted with his surgery, removed his sutures today, and the incision has healed beautifully.

Great news all around for Bentley!

Meet Dennis Ronzani, DVM, Emergency Veterinarian Mentorship Program participant, pictured here assisting Dr. Becky Kessler, DVM, DACVIM, during an endoscopy procedure.

Born in Switzerland, Dennis has lived an adventurous life. He spent part of his childhood on a sailboat before settling on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada. Growing up on a small hobby farm, he developed a deep love for animals and an early interest in veterinary medicine after watching the local veterinarian care for their animals.

Though he initially considered a career in human medicine as an ER or trauma surgeon, Dennis’s passion for animal health ultimately won. During his time working in complex care through the COVID-19 pandemic, he realized veterinary medicine was his true calling. After earning his biology degree, Dennis began applying to veterinary schools and ultimately chose to attend Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, embracing both the academic challenge and the opportunity to experience a new part of the world. He completed his clinical year at the University of California, Davis, one of the top veterinary programs in North America.

As part of the Emergency Veterinarian Mentorship Program, Dennis splits his time between Bay State Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Services (BSVESS), where he takes primary case responsibility and gains hands-on experience, and Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS), where he focuses on emergency and critical care while shadowing specialty services.

Driven, compassionate, and always eager to learn, Dennis is excited to continue growing his skills in emergency and specialty medicine while providing the best care possible for his patients.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Caylie Voudren, MS, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM), to our Internal Medicine team! Dr. Voudren brings exceptional knowledge and passion for patient care, and we are excited to have her as part of our team at both Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services and Ocean State Veterinary Specialists.

Dr. Caylie Voudren hails from the great state of Texas, where she earned her bachelor's, master's, and veterinary degrees at Texas A&M. After veterinary school, Dr. Voudren completed a rotating internship at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, followed by residency at Kansas State University, where she became board-certified in internal medicine. In her search for an environment she could enjoy both inside and outside of the hospital, Dr. Voudren stumbled across the hidden gem that is Rhode Island, and the rest is history!

Dr. Voudren’s interest in internal medicine first sparked in graduate school, when her Shih Tzu, Romy, was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. This experience helps Dr. Voudren to connect with her clients and form relationships built on empathy, patience, and trust. Dr. Voudren’s favorite thing about internal medicine is its wide variety of disease processes, making every day new and interesting. She especially loves a good challenge, including cases that are hard to crack or don’t play by the rules.

Dr. Voudren’s personal life takes on a similar theme outside of the hospital, with an ever-expanding collection of hobbies, from exploring the outdoors to various arts and crafts. Her best friend is a German Shepherd named Monty, who enjoys training and participating in dog sports. She also has a Persian named Ophelia, who she jokes is more Monty’s cat than hers.
