Max is soaking up the sunshine and some well-deserved love after his radiation treatment!

After each session, our technicians roll out the red carpet — peanut butter, high-value wet food, and yes, even the stinkiest treats (which, let’s be honest, are always the biggest hit!). While we know hospital visits aren’t exactly fun, we do everything we can to make them a little brighter, with plenty of pampering, cuddles, and positivity.

Max is currently undergoing treatment for a sarcoma in his left lumbar region with the expert care of our Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Kevin Ware, DVM, DACVR-RO, and our dedicated radiation and anesthesia technicians.

One of the best parts of our job? Getting to build bonds with amazing patients like Max and making sure they feel safe, loved, and treated like family. 💙

Welcome Dr. Karolina Preisner!

Meet Dr. Karolina Preisner, our newest addition to the BSVESS team of Emergency Clinicians! Originally from the Northeast, Dr. Preisner ventured west to attend veterinary school in Colorado. After graduating from veterinary school, she completed her internship at Colorado State University, where she contributed to an outpatient parvo study. Her journey took her to Oregon, though she soon realized it wasn’t the right fit. She then spent two years in Las Vegas working as a GP and relief veterinarian before returning to the Northeast to be closer to family. After working in Northern Massachusetts, she found her way back to emergency medicine, which is her true passion.

When she’s not in the ER, Dr. Preisner enjoys paddleboarding, hiking, and spending time outdoors. She shares her home with three cats and a dog who, according to her, mostly identifies as a cat. You’ll often find them frequenting the dog park together!

We’re so grateful to have Dr. Preisner on our team, providing compassionate and skilled care to our patients.

Maci just completed her radiation treatment for an adrenal tumor! She received hypofractionated radiation therapy in five targeted doses, administered with care and precision by Dr. Kevin Ware, DVM, ACVR-RO, and our dedicated team of radiation and anesthesia technicians. We’re so proud of her strength and resilience!

At Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services, our oncology team, led by board-certified specialists Dr. Kevin Ware and Dr. Amy Koterbay, BVMS, MS, DACVIM, provides compassionate, comprehensive cancer care for pets. Each treatment plan is thoughtfully tailored to the individual patient and may include chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or a combination of therapies.

Our oncologists work closely with referring veterinarians, surgeons, and our in-house clinical pathologist to ensure an accurate diagnosis and a collaborative approach to care. From the first consultation to each follow-up visit, we are with you every step of the way.

We’re honored to support patients like Maci on their journey toward healing. 💕

Did you know that we offer a Pet Loss Support Group? 💔

The dates for our May Pet Loss Support Group are Tuesday, May 13th, and Tuesday, May 27th, from 4:30 - 5:45 PM. The group is held virtually on Zoom.

Our Pet Loss Support Group provides:

• A safe, compassionate space to talk about and feel your grief among others who understand
• Information about the grief process, coping skills, and self-care
• Discussion of memorial and ritual ideas to honor your pet’s life
• Finding an enduring connection with your pet while moving forward

Testimony from our Pet Loss Support Group:

"I cannot say enough good things about this Pet Loss Support Group. Dr. Hamin is incredibly patient and understanding, and provides great resources to help you cope with your loss. The group is filled with others suffering the same loss as you. You never feel alone, and it’s helpful to hear how others think and feel. I recommend this group to anyone who is struggling with the loss of their beloved pet. My cat, Colby, was with me for 20 years and was extremely affectionate; although the pain and heartache will never completely go away, I have found peace within this group."
— Melissa D., Colby's owner

X-rays, also known as radiographs, are one of the most commonly used diagnostic tools in veterinary medicine. They allow us to see inside your pet’s body to evaluate their bones, detect foreign objects, and examine large body cavities like the chest and abdomen. Veterinarians use X-rays to help diagnose various conditions, including broken bones, tumors, dental issues, joint problems, and internal injuries. While X-rays provide excellent detail of hard tissues like bones, they are less effective for viewing soft tissues such as organs and muscles unless contrast agents are used. The procedure is non-invasive and generally very safe. It uses a low dose of ionizing radiation to create images, and our trained staff takes every precaution to minimize exposure while ensuring your pet’s comfort and safety.

Radiography is vital to our ability to diagnose and treat our patients quickly and effectively, getting them the care they need when they need it most.

Molly recently completed her oncology treatments here at Bay State Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Services, and we couldn’t be prouder! 💙

Under the expert care of Dr. Amy Koterybay, BVMS, MS, DACVIM, and our dedicated technicians, Molly was treated for a mast cell tumor and just received her final dose of Vinblastine. That means it’s officially graduation day for this brave girl!

Molly has been an absolute superstar throughout her treatment, and we’re so happy to celebrate this milestone with her and her family.

Way to go, Miss Molly!

This is us Thursday!

Meet Amanda Bielawski, CVT, our overnight cat-wrangling veterinarian technician with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Rhode Island and two years as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Amanda Bielawski brings heart, humor, and hustle to every shift. Her journey began as a Technician Assistant in surgery at OSVS, but after nine months, she explored General Practice for four years. While GP gave her a solid foundation, it didn’t quite satisfy her craving for variety and adrenaline. “I got bored,” she admits with a laugh. That all changed in 2020 when she joined the BSVESS family as a veterinary technician, and nearly five years later, she’s thriving in the fast-paced, unpredictable world of emergency medicine.

“You never know what’s coming through the door,” she says. ER life is her calling, and she thrives in its controlled chaos. Whether she’s placing NG tubes, hitting cystocentesis on tiny bladders, or comforting critical patients in their final moments, Amanda gives it her all, always ensuring they feel safe, full, and loved before crossing the rainbow bridge.

Amanda typically works overnight, where a slim but mighty staff keeps the hospital running. She does it all: fields phone calls, checks clients out, triages patients, and handles discharges. That tight-knit environment means the world to her. “Even on the hardest nights, I know I’m supported by my team,” she shares. Known affectionately as the cat wrangler, Amanda has a soft spot for the older, grumpier felines others might shy away from. “They come out of their shells a little more overnight,” she says. She also adores poodles and has a natural gift for soothing even the most anxious patients.

Outside of work, Amanda is a proud cat mom to Oliver, Sasha, and Gracie. Originally from Rhode Island, she’s a beach lover and total summer soul. When she’s not caring for patients, you’ll find her soaking up live country music at concerts, shopping, hiking, or enjoying a great meal out.

Here is Leia during her post-op recovery from a bilateral laryngeal sacculectomy, soft palate resection, rhinoplasty, and ovariohysterectomy—all expertly performed by Dr. M. Faulkner Besancon, DVM, DACVS. Leia’s loving personality shone through in recovery—she couldn’t stop giving our team kisses! In fact, we set up a little "kissing booth" just for her, so every time a team member passed by, they got a loving smooch!

At our hospital, we tailor each pet’s stay based on their unique personality and needs. Some patients require extra tender loving care, while others appreciate a bit more personal space. Whether it’s extra blankets, a specific bed, or simply a calm environment, we strive to make every pet feel as comfortable as possible. We understand that the hospital can be a daunting place with its unfamiliar scents, commotion, and necessary procedures, but rest assured, our team’s commitment is to provide compassionate, high-quality medical care at every step.

We’re proud to make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. 💕
