SADLY THOUGH,
Dogs fed fresh but unbalanced food, often develop serious nutrient imbalances. Owners are unaware until their dogs bodies begin breaking down months or years later.
BUT 99% of kibble is basically pure toxin, and causes severe chronic disease earlier and earlier each generation.
AND many commercially prepared fresh foods are not backed by any evidence, and are being presented as the magical solution to dog health.
What can we do as pet parents?!?! How can we heal our dogs bodies in a world of food lies.
Its time to go back in time and learn how our domestic dogs have eaten for thousands of years.
If you don't have time to do the research many vets have done it for you. I highly recommend Karen Becker, Conor Brady, Nick Thompson, Judy Morgan, the list goes on!!
My favorite resource is The Forever Dog book, but other great ones are the Dogs are Individuals podcast, RawPetMedics podcast, and the Feed Real Institute.
For anyone currently feeding raw or freshly cooked diy, you can test your pups nutrient levels at Parsley Pet. A great calculator to use is at feedreal.com.
The best first step for all pet parents to take is to decrease kibble by about 10%, and then start replacing it with high quality toppers, 1 item for a few days. See how your pup reacts, and then try a new topper. DO NOT decrease their kibble amount more than 10% without talking to a canine health professional.
DO ADD Fermented veggies are great, like saurkraut. Variety is key, broccoli sprouts, goat kefir, cooked mushrooms, cauliflower, asparagus are great. Celery and carrots can be cooked or used as fun chews.
You can also use great proteins like in water no salt sardines, farm fresh and pasture raised whole eggs, and small amounts of organ. Some dogs react to the high fat content in organs and may need a slower transition with more specific assistance.
What I strictly avoid onions, chives, nutmeg, high doses of garlic extract, cocoa chocolate, and grapes and raisins. (FEDIAF)
The Official Judy Morgan's Naturally Healthy Pets fb group has a great top commercial brand pet food list in its Files section. Susan Thixton also creates a thoroughly vetted list every year!
