What’s that crawling around in there? An ear mite stuck in an air bubble we captured on a microscope slide! 🔬
The ear mite, Otodectes cynotis, is a surface mite that lives on cats, dogs, rabbits, and ferrets. It is the second most common ectoparasite (external parasite) found in pets; the most common is the flea. It is usually found in the ear canal. Ear mites are highly contagious, and animals become infested by direct contact with another infested animal. Thankfully, they are very treatable and rarely cause any long term issues!
Felix came to his appointment ready to impress 🤩
Stella had a TPLO surgery (Tibial-plateau-leveling-osteotomy) with us in September. After this major surgery, dogs benefit from rehabilitation services (like water treadmill!) to regain the best mobility and strength. Stella might not know all that, but she does know it’s a pretty fun time! 🌊
That’s a big bunny! Smokey is a Flemish Giant, weighing in at about 11 pounds, which is actually on the small side for this breed. 🐰
He was a recent addition to this family, and came with severe matting. In order to remove the mats in the safest and kindest way, Smokey has been visiting us weekly to be gradually de-matted, and he’s already looking and feeling so much better! Next up are those adorable feet.
Our staff was fascinated by Dino the chameleon at his visit this week. 🦎
We were honored and deeply saddened to assist the DeKalb Police Department in leading a procession yesterday for K-9 Drax from our hospital to Pets At Peace Crematory Inc. after his unexpected passing. On May 31st, he succumbed to a medical issue, despite the best efforts to save him.
K-9 Drax was sworn into the DeKalb Police Department on December 3, 2021. Our staff loved working with him and we want to express our deepest condolences to the department and his handler. The Dekalb Police Department will announce a memorial service to honor him in the future.
Here’s some wholesome content to get you through the rest of your week- Tiddles the tortoise dressed as a dinosaur! 🦖
Tiddles is owner by assistant/receptionist Amilee and the fabulous costume was created by our technician Tara!
Sometimes you have to bring a buddy along to help you be brave for your water treadmill. Sweet Clyde decided this unicorn stuffy was the perfect pal. 🦄
This video was taken through our microscope. We know it isn't the clearest, but that wiggling portion is a "baby" heartworm. Adult female heartworms release their offspring, called microfilariae, into the dog's bloodstream. When a mosquito bites the infected dog, they can become infected with the microfilariae. 🪱🦟

ZuZu was not happy about her water therapy being done! 🤣
