The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is monitoring a local outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). While the risk to the general population is considered low, there are important steps that can be taken to protect you and your pets.

The current local outbreak has been in Canada geese. We do not recommend attempting to handle or move ill Canada geese, and Oaken Acres Wildlife Center (our local wildlife rehabilitator) is not currently accepting Canada geese due to the risks to their staff and resident animals. Oaken Acres Wildlife Center can still be consulted at 815-895-9666 for concerns with any other species of wildlife.

If you need to remove a deceased bird from your property, please visit the following link for the Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines on how to do so safely: https://dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/diseases-and-conditions/respiratory-disease/diseases/influenza/h5n1/dead-bird-disposal-5-or-more.html

If you find five or more deceased birds in one area, notify your local district wildlife biologist, which can be found here: https://wildlifeillinois.org/idnr-district-wildlife-biologist/

While there have not been recent local reports, avian influenza has historically been reported in humans and a variety of domestic animals, including cats, dogs, and farm animals. While the infection risk to mammals is generally low, felines seem to be more susceptible to infection than other mammals. Most felines that have become infected with avian influenza did so after consuming raw meat or carcasses from presumed positive birds, or unpasteurized milk from presumed positive cattle. To reduce risk of exposure to pets, we recommend keeping pets away from areas where Canada geese congregate. We do not recommend allowing your pet to consume raw meat, carcasses or raw milk.

There is an increased risk to poultry birds, like chickens, turkeys and domestic geese. We recommend the following resource for information about how to protect domestic bird populations:https://www.aphis.usda.gov/sites/default/files/bro-protect-poultry-from-ai.pdf

If you experience flu-like symptoms after exposure to an ill or deceased bird, contact your local health department and health provider. If your pet experiences fever, lethargy, low appetite, reddened or inflamed eyes, nose discharge, changes in breathing, or neurological changes after exposure to an ill or deceased bird, seek veterinary care immediately.
